If you are an American, you should do more than vote this election.
George Bush was president #43. 4 times in American history, the popular vote has differed in result from the electoral vote. That means that almost 10% of our presidents have taken office after more Americans voted for somebody else. Does your vote really count?
There have been over 150 individual incidents wherein a person was voted to the electoral college, and then cast a vote for a different candidate then they were pledged to. So far, no one has been punished for such behavior. That means that your vote could very well help a different party than you support.
The electoral college is a joke. This is one of a myriad of institutions to make this Republic look like a Democracy, so that when there is a problem it looks like “we the people” screwed up and just have to wait around for the next round of elections. There simply won’t be a revolution in a country who’s populace thinks they are already in control.
This election, take some action. Even if it is just to write to your congressmen to tell them that you would like to vote for president rather than counting on the 530 people in the electoral college to choose your leader.
And if you don’t know how this country prevents you from having a say who will be your leaders, the most important action you can do is educate yourself. Go research how the electoral college works. Go and research how many positions in the top levels of the government are simply appointments or nominations made exclusively by other positions you don’t have a direct say in.
To the people who are looking for power over us, our complacency is just as good a result as slavery. Take some action this election.
