If you have any medical background and volunteer work, perhaps place an ad in the J&C about assisting the elderly in their home. Offer to play cards, read, watch TV with them. Being a companion is not a cure for a physical disease, but it does cure the emotional disease of loneliness. Start out as a volunteer, have recommendations and references, previous job history and a good reason why someone should trust you in their home. Call the United Way or Area 4. They may know of actual job opportunities and grants for college. Don’t forget Americorps. They are a volunteer service helping the elderly. The organization can help you with Nursing school and such. That’s my just my philosophy though.
