Another question regarding Editing: Any writers out

there that need a freelance person to edit their writing that would be willing to have a somewhat symbiotic relationship, where I edit their work and they allow me to use it in a portfolio? Copywrited and all credit due to the original author of course. Just need some help getting started…thanks :)

well, I have the beginnings of a piece I’m working on which could use an editorial eye….I just don’t know when I’m going to get the time to do anymore work on it….It is work in progress and will get attention sometime but I just don’t know when.
It is about 3000 words.
If you need something from someone who is working regulary then I probably cant help…

I know myself as a writer, I wouldn’t want my work in a portfolio, unless it was my own and being under contract with a publisher they have thier own stricked rules and guidlines, and anything outside of that, such as allowing author’s work in a portfolio would be breach of contract. So please make sure your publisher knows before you sign a contract of previous agreements.

( My current book that is under contract is seven years, and it cannot be published anywhere else, even showcasing your work on a website is considered a published work)

Writers who are with agents or with a publisher have thier own editors.

Advertise your credentials, such as schooling, diplomas on a website, or a ebook authoring site, in the paper, and hand out business cards to the local publishing/or printers (Kinkos)

Go to your local book store and see if there is a book signing coming up, see if you can talk to the author after the signing to see how to go about marketing yourself. This is pretty bold, but again I myself as an author would take the time out for some one looking for questions because the writing business is a HARD, nearly difficult market to get into, let alone make money at.

Go to the freelance writing sites, and you most likely can or will find a link there. But make sure you research your fee, if any and what you are capable of editing, don’t set your sites too high if you are unsure of editing poetry, but are used to editing fiction. There are many scammers out there in the writing world and one fals move however innocent on your part, will mark you in the writers world for a looong time.
We are sensitive souls…

Have fun! All the best to you.
Shannon

Emilie: I’m more or less just trying to get my foot in the door and gain some experience in the world of editing. Literature has always been a passion of mine and I’ve found that my strengths lie in editing. I’d love to help out in editing your work if you’re interested. No fee or anything, more just for practice :)

srnityblu: thanks for the good advice :) I never really thought about the possibility of breaching contracts..although my whole goal atm is just to gain some experience and get my foot in the door (like I mentioned to Emilie). Anything I would help someone in editing would be purely symbiotic in nature: they get a second look at their work for free and I gain some experience in editing. I’d love it if someone wouldn’t mind their work being added casually to my portfolio (not even an entire work is needed). It wouldn’t be a published portfolio, its only that I need some examples of my editing skills for the Uni course I want to take.
You mentioned freelance writing sites…any good links that you wouldn’t mind sharing if you know of any? Will a general google search work? I’m really JUST getting started. I don’t have a degree and anything that I edit would be free, no fees included. I don’t have the credentials to charge anyone ! *lol* Thanks again.

Have you tried applying for a “blog site” this is a good way to get the credentials and experience you need?

Have you considered your own blog? It’s free and can be a excellent tool to market yourself.

http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com/ — This site is good for all sorts of freelance jobs, you just have to sort through the list, she goes through the sites on the web, she does the work so you don’t have to. Send her an email, she may be willing and able to help you and set you on the right course.

Hope this helps! Have fun!
