Psychiatrist deals with pathological cases, psychologist is just a specialist in human soul, they don’t treat diseases.

I think a psychologist is a person someone you can go to talk to in order to fix a mental problem, without physical treatment with drugs. Pyschiatrists are the opposite. Also, I’ve personally seen that pyschiatrists tend to deal with legal investigations occasionally. I for example, was questioned by a pyschiatrist when my parents divorced, although I already was assigned a pyschologist I knew well already by the court.

One sits down and takes notes while you lie down, and the other says, “Now, how do you feel about that?”

Both are doctors, but a Psychologist is a PhD, while a Psychiatrist is an MD… of course this allows the Psychiatrist to prescribe medications.

a psychologist is someone who studies psychology e.g. the mind and how it works such as memory and a psychiatrist is someone who deals with psychological diseases and problems like schizophrenia and depression

Many of the above answers are correct: psychiatrists are MDs, they go to medical school and can prescribe medications, people often go to them for a diagnosis of a mental illness, at which point they will usually prescribe a medication and/or refer the person to a psychologist for psychotherapy in addition to or instead of the medication to help treat the problem. Then they continue to see the patient to monitor their progress. They sometimes also do their own psychotherapy with patients. Psychologists, on the other hand, either do only psychotherapy, or they just do research on psychological topics. I am currently in graduate school getting a PhD in psychology, but I won’t ever work with clients and do psychotherapy because I’m not going to be that kind of psychologist, I’m going to be the kind that does research to learn about the things that cause people to end up going to the other kind of psychologists and psychiatrists. Hope that helps clarify.

The psychologist usually has more experience in therapy only. He usually has a PhD degree. The psychiatrist, however, has to go to medical school first. He has experience in therapy, but may not be as skilled as the psychologist. The psychiatrist can prescribe pills, and is usually associated with more severe mental problems that require medication. The psychologist usually deals with rpoblmes that have more of an emotional root.
