4.50x + 6.50y = 5.85*40
x + y = 40

x = lbs cashews
y = lbs pecans

solve and you get
x = 13 lbs
y = 27 lbs

I find it hard to believe that this will be any help for you because it is so late after your post, but I enjoyed doing the math problem and maybe someone out there can gain something from this.
