Anyone know what the currency was in early A.D.?

That’s the time period my story takes and the guy needs $100 so how would I say that? And is that a lot of money back then? If it’s not I’ll raise the price… I suck at history…

Where? In the Americas? Or Europe? There were different currencies back then, so it all depends on where your character is.

In the Roman Empire I would guess that it would be worth a fair amount since
a)one gold coin is worth 25 denarii, the main currency
but not so expensive because
b) they actually had coins made of gold

From Wikipedia

The main Roman currency during most of the Roman Republic and the western half of the Roman Empire consisted of coins including the aureus (gold), the denarius (silver), the sestertius (bronze), the dupondius (bronze), and the as (copper).

The denarius (plural denarii) was the main currency.
