I was just hired to teach at a trade school, and although I know my subject very well I’ve never taught in a class room setting before!

Needless to say, I’m feeling a little bit overwhelmed.
Does anyone have an suggestions for a first time teacher?

Be yourself! I always enjoyed my teachers who were just themselves… no matter how tough, how nice, or how scatter-brained they were… hehe

I agree with Lrenah. In addition, speak clearly Address your students by name (this will take time) be confident.

Do not show them weakness,I’ve seen teachers get torn apart because kids saw they were weak and soft and exploited it. Thats not to say be cruel, they hate that too. Just make sure you show them whose boss.

It can be very nerve-racking getting in front of a class and teaching for the first time; I would definitely suggest you make a lesson plan, written out, so that if you start to get nervous and forget what comes next you can look at your plan and get back on track.
Good luck.

You know the teachers that I remember the most are the ones that made their classes fun and educational. They didn’t just read out of a text book and assign homework. I actually looked forward to those classes and I participated wholeheartedly in whatever was going on. I loved class room discussions and when I was in high school I was very shy, so you can see how much it helped me. As a matter of fact my math teacher and I had a bet that my answer was right and his was wrong…guess who won and got the milk shake!…lol…I hope this helps and Good Luck!
