I need help from a computer technician if there is one on help.com.

I have a desktop that basically has so many issues I don’t know where to start. It needs help basically and I have exhausted most possibilities. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled windows XP all together.

Ok here’s the problem(s). It will randomly switch itself off every now and then with out warning and then start back up as normal and as soon as it starts up I get like 5-8 little windows saying that windows had corrupted or did something it shouldn’t and McAfee (Oh how I HATE McAfee, not my computer so I can’t be blamed for putting it on there :-p ) has been corrupt or damaged and had to close yada yada yada. Then it will come up with a set of random numbers that have crashed or corrupt.
The other problems I have with it are… these boxes would come up every now and then and then it would freeze, every now and then it wont shut down when told (Computer actually says NO to being shut down) so it’s hold the switch for 10 seconds and that seems to do it.

Here is what I have done to try and resolve it…
I have clocked back the computer to a date before all of this came about and it didn’t work. Still had the same problems. Ok so after backing up all files I could (all the files the computer would actually let me back up without switching off half way on) I uninstalled windows and then reinstalled it.
It seemed to have worked and then mum put McAfee on it and suddenly all the problems came back. Windows still says it’s corrupt and McAfee is still corrupt/damaged and it still randomly switches off.

Now I’ve still one more idea to try out and that’s uninstall and reinstall windows xp all over again only DON’T put McAfee on it and put the security I use, which it F-Secure, on it instead and see how that goes.
But I would also like advice from someone who would have a better clue of how to fix it (other then with a sledge hammer).

Please please please is there a computer technician out there that could help me????
I really need help with this, I have been trying to solve this problem for that past week and it is driving me up the wall.

Oh and please hold back from the “Windows is crap” and “McAfee is Crap” comments please. I know this already so you don’t need to tell me something I already know :-p

Thanks. I’m gonna give my idea a shot and see how it goes. We’ve always had problems with McAfee but mum wont listen when I say “Ditch the program and use something else”. I’d like to think it’s all McAfee rather then a hardware problem.

Anyone else got any ideas please say!

It’s bought not built especially. It didn’t come with an XP cd but my laptop did so I’m used that when reinstalling xp. We’ve a recovery disk with drives on it (So I’m told. I didn’t create the recovery disk so I wouldn’t know).

k. I would try gettin rid of McAfee and see how it goes, if that does not work, then it could be a driver problem but i am not to sure on that.
Maybe you are better of posting this problem on a tech support forum , they be able to give you better advice then i can and if you cant get any other help of here.

wish i could help.

Thanks. I have posted on a techy site… several but not getting much help. They are telling me to try everything that I have already tried.

I’m going to reinstall xp again in a bit and not put McAfee on it. I’ll use my one instead and see how that goes.

Just out of curiosity does anyone else have problems with McAfee?

If your PC seems like its slowing down or having a hard time surfing the web or just doesn’t seem right.
You should go to http://download.com and get these programs. AD-Aware, Spybot search and destroy, CCleaner and and if you dont have an Antivirus program you can use Avast or AVG, and for your firewall a good program is Zone Alarm. Install these programs and run them regulary. This will keep your system clean and running properly. These programs are free and Download.com is a part of CNET (the site that your posting on right now). Hope this helps :-)

Switch you computer of, then wait 10 secs, switch it back on and look in the top left hand corner, to see if you get a prompt to press one of the F keys. for recovery.
Then come back and tell me if there was or wasn’t a prompt.

From the way you telling me your Operation System is corrupted. You mention that you installed Window XP. Do you install from scratch with WIndow Xp cd? If you did install window Xp all over again, there might be something wrong with the hard drive or system board. Here what you can do;
when computer booting up, hold down F12 key, it will bring you in the start up safe mode. in there select the hard drive daignos, and wait for a minutes or two. This process will test your hard drivre to see if it anything wrong with. If there nothing with your harddrive, then is must be your system board.

Well I have finished reinstalling windows xp from the CD. In installing there where two problems and they where that two of the windows xp icon pictures could not been installed. I looked more into it and they are icons that can be downloaded from the windows site for free. However for the moment I am reluctant to do any more to it.
I plan to leave it for the rest of the day and start installing programs tomorrow. That way if something goes wrong I can restore it back to today (I have created a restore point for today). At the moment I can only do this one step at a time and one day at a time. I’m hoping it is sorted now. If not then I will try out frozen.rain’s idea and see what the results are (The way I see it, it’s already broke so anything I do can’t make it worse).
To be honest if there is more problems with it then I will have to take it back to the place where I got it from and get the to take it apart and look at it.

Thank you all for all your posts. Will be in touch. If there anyone out there with the same problem as me or has issues with McAfee please let me know. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one and tell me (If you can) how you sorted this problem out.

Thanks

One question are you using the original XP CD or a restore CD with XP on it? The new install should load to desktop and show the Start Menu Properties and ask if you want a tour of XP with no errors. If you encountered and error there may be something wrong with the CD that your using to install XP. Check the disk for excessive scratches or smudges also check the CD player for dust and clean the lens. Hope this helps :-)

When you reinstal the system, do you delete all partitions and reformat it to NTSF? Also when you first set it up, how long did it run before it started to act up? Also where you able to activate it when asked? Just woundering because you said that the cd is for the laptop and your using it on the desktop PC.

Ok there are things that are becoming unclear here so let me sort it out…
- The disk I have is based for laptop and desktop.
- I delete all partitions before reformatting them.
- I chose the NTSF that didn’t have the quick option.
- And before I did all of this the problems where REALLY random. There was not set time between switching it on and it doing it’s weird things. It would be anything from 5 mins after start up to 3 hours after start up. Also it would happen on random programs eg didn’t matter what program was running it would randomly crash.

Ok Pink

First of all lets get rid of McFee

Switch off your machine
Press F8 and hold then reboot
This will take you to safe mode
When in safe mode uninstall McAfee
When this is done switch off system restore
Click start, accessories, system tools, system restore.
Left hand side system restore settings
tick the box and apply.
Now reboot your machine.
Download AVG from link and install
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/
Once installed update then run virus check.
once clean switch back on system restore and creat a restore point.
You can then configure AVG as you wish.
See how the machine now runs.
You can now download this firewall if you dont already have one.
Installing this software will automaticly switch off windows firewall ( Windows firewall usless )
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file…
You should as well download this anti spyware program and run it.
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/f…
It is at the bottom of the page
These should clean up your machine

well im training to be a computer technician so i do have a little input of what i would do. first as of your computer shutting off at random times could be either your fan isnt working properly or its to dusty in you computer that your heat sink wont collect the heat to be blown out. it is a small possibilty that your CPU can be overheating so it shuts off. Personally i like to use AdAware for my spyware viruses and AVG Free trial for my bigger viruses. you can download them for free online just google them. As for you files being currpt well your possibly have a virus or something and will have to scan your computer. well hope you get everything fixed and if you need anything else just email me at (email removed) and for the SUBJECT type computer tech so i know its you

Well here’s an update. The computer broke to a point where it wouldn’t start up or anything. So we took it to the local technitions to look at it and they have sorted the problem. Turns out that the power supply inside had been knocked when we took it to the same people to be cleaned. There wasn’t enough power going to the ram and hard drive to support it so it would randomly shut down.

They have Fixed it now free of charge (as it was there fault in the first place) and it works perfectly fine. thank you all ever so much for your help. I had used a lot of the advice everyone had given to fix it but like I said it eventually got to a point where it wouldn’t even start up.

Thank you again everyone!

And keep helping others out there!
