Vincent - did I get ripped off

I have a 98 audi and I took it in for a 65000 mile service and they charged me $2500.00 to repair a “ripped boot in the frame” or something like that. Did I get ripped off?

Ripped boot in the frame? 2.5 grand? Possibly you did. A boot, I think, is a part of the drive shaft system. If recall right, it’s the component that allows you to turn the wheels while still maintaining the ability for the motor to turn them.

I imagine those might be expensive to fix, but holy buhjebus, that’s a lotta cash.

Audi is notorious for charging up the *** for little things like these, it comes with the territory. German cars are a PITA for the do-it-yourselfer. For example, my friend has a 1998 Audi A4 1.8T. His headlight switch stopped working so he brought it into the dealer. It was a ~$400 fix! Woulda probably been a $100 fix AT MOST for a Japanese car. Not to mention every little screw on the car uses tamper proof torx heads. Hard to find tools!

Anyway, what model is your Audi and what exactly is this part? Never heard of a frame boot or anything like that, but German cars are a whole different breed, I’m a Japanese car guy =)
