I installed 4GB RAM into my comp., but only 3GB being used.

I am using XP .please advise.

This depends on your computer. The maximum ram capacity that is used at once varies. Mine is 3GB to, I’ve seen some that are 5GB. It could be that your max is 3. See how many RAM slots you have check your maximum ram capability and some might have dual channel RAM so take advantage.

Most boards will hold 4 gigs of memory but XP can only see 3 gigs of memory. So basicly you have wasted 1 gig of memory. If you where running a windows server program or vista you could see all 4 gigs.

All 32 bit operating systems can’t use more than 4gigs of ram since their address space is … you guessed it … 32 bits (that is 2^32) — however all operating systems need to reserve a chunk of memory for internal functions like where the hardware drivers are loaded into memory — and they usually reserve the top 512 - 768 MB’s of ram — so you end up with 3.25 “usable” ram —

If you install a 64bit operating system you would be able to use all of your physical ram.
