happiness help: I’m in first year at university but I do not want to continue because I know this course is not right for me, what should I do? - Help.com

I’m in first year at university but I do not want to continue because I know this course is not right for me, what should I do?

Should I keep going because it will give me a good job at the end of the course but risk being unhappy or should I be happy and just get a normal job.

I changed courses after my first year of university. It’s actually a fairly normal thing to do. You just need to weigh up all of your options and work out what’s most important to you. If being happy is more important, than go with the direction that will give you the most happiness. If you’re more concerned with having a good job at the end, then stick with the course. It’s your life, so it’s your choice :)

i think you should leave. i changed courses and i miss my old course, but to be fair i love my new course and im getting good grades cos i put all my heart and effort in so actually leaving wasnt a bad thing and i was in my final year of my degree so i guess its up 2 u. Outweigh the advantages and disadvantages and choose with your mind. Dont stay just because of friends stay if u think you can pull through ok?? hope i helped you!

hey meee! Education is to prepare for working/career. The decision is yours, however knowing what you want to be when you grow up is most helpful when deciding what to educate for. Not sure what you mean by “normal”? Don’t quit til you know where you are going. It should be easy enough to alter your plans while in school. It is harder to get started back to school again if you leave and start working. Think about where you want to be in 5, 10, 20+ years. Success is what you define(not others) it to be for you. You can do anything if you follow your goals, educate, stay healthy…….hope you find the right thing for you.

Stick it out. Half the people I knew did not end up in a career that refelcted their course studies. In the end it is a paper that gets your foot in the door. I have an economics degree and now I manage a team of sales idiots for a major chemical company. Go figure.

look for a different course that would interest you. i am assuming it is the course you dont like and not uni in general. have a chat with your adviser of studies aswell, that may help.

don’t drop out. you may never get back to school and end up with a career and pay that are even more dreadful that the course you’re currently in.

finish your current semester, or quarter. in the meantime, speak with a college counselor about what you would like to study instead. if you are in your first year, you haven’t really wasted much time. in fact you discovered a path that isn’t for you. so just choose another path as soon as you can. but leaving school entirely would be more like wandering off the path and into the forest. you don’t want to lose your way.
