How good do you have to be to ‘play’ an istrument?

I’m about to apply for a job as a teacher, but they want someone who can play the piano. I had lessons for 8 years when I was a child, but never took exams and didn’t practice!
I’ve just assessed myself, I think I’m about comfortable grade 3 standard, grade 4 is I practice lots, and my knowlege of theory is probably only grade 1 or 2.

So- can I ‘play’? In your own opinion, how good do you have to be before you can say you can play an instrument?

total sh1t if you just wanna play, to be in a band you have to have some basic sense of timing or rythem. But yeah what you really need is to just love music, pick up a guitar get a tab for some greenday (or whatever the fvck you kids listen to nower days) and you’ll be hooked as soon as it starts to sound like your fav song.

I think your answer was good! nobodysalou I mean she said she could play not that she was any good at it, though she has some basic background I think she will do just fine.

Thank you both! Yup, I’m from wales. Just wondering if the basic knowledge I have is enough to lean on- if anyone asked me normally, I’d say ‘no’, because I’m not the type who can just sit at a piano and play anything. I need a copy, and I need practice, and I’, still not fab… but I can bang out a tune.

If all else fails- maybe I’ll use your advice to start my own band lol
