My daughter wants a dog and swears she is going to walk it twice a day.

I told her that my information shows me that a dog needs 4 walks a day, but she is sure our dog would be fine with just two. Should I get the dog? Shall I believe she is going to walk that dog every day and feed it, too?

Two long walks may be fine, but have you considered a pony? Girl’s love ponies…

It seems like she is already complaining about walking it twice instead of four times, isn’t that a sign, test her with a pet toy and see if she dresses up to walk it two to three times a day before she gets an actual real dog.

That is a good point, Dr. Phil. I think I might skip that step though. Her bonsai, which she was going to water twice a week died of thirst……..so perhaps she is not old enough yet. Maybe when she moves out of the house, lol.

Ooh, ponies! Yes, we should think about several, so they will have the company of each other. They will really spruce up our cul-de-sac, too! lol

Not to mention the endless supply of fertilizer for your lawn.

There are a couple parents in my neighborhood always walking their kid’s dogs. My wife walks mine. Dogs are great, though.

Nice thought, Amanda. Yes, and the plus is that even if we decide against getting a pet of our own, she still gets the experience of getting to know dogs! I like it. Thanks.

Two walks a day is deffo fine, sometimes just one is enough- it depends on how long the walk is, and what breed of dog you get.
I’d say that you shouldn’t get a sheepdog or other similar energetic breed like a retriever unless you live in the country and can give it lots of space to run about, and at least one hour long walk a day, at a decent pace, if not two.

Any middle sized dog that isn’t quite so energetic, like a terrier perhaps should, I think, have either one walk a day for about an hour, or two walks at 20-30 mins each.

That’s just my opinion, of course. I have a labrador that we walk once for between an hour and hour and a half a day, and when things happen (as they do) and we can’t take her some days, we’ll make up for it at the weekend and take her for a run at the beach or something. She does just fine!

As for your daughter- your only a child once, and as a young person she’ll have work commitments, money restrictions etc so she may not have the chance to have a dog again till she’s a pensioner! I’d let her try. Dogs teach kids a lot about responsibility and love and health and the facts of life, and, sadly, eventually death. I think pets are very good for kids.

It seems like it’s usually worth it to get a pet for children, if for no other reason than to give them experience with responsibility. However, don’t let that fool you into thinking that they will always be responsible for it. Pretty much no child takes full care of their own pet. If you’re alright with your kid trying to take care of a dog, then maybe you should give her a chance. Just keep in mind that this will eventually stop being your kid’s dog and will become the family dog, with everyone pitching in. It just happens.
