Political Ethics

Is it ethical for a State Representative to lobby for money to support the work of a non-profit org of which they are a member of the board of directors?

Is anything really ethical about politics?

When in doubt, don’t do it. I ran through several scenarios in my head, and most of them seemed sketchy…perhaps it would be OK if you were lobbying on behalf of a bill someone else introduced.

Well, you wouldn’t be making any money as the member of a board of directors of a non-profit, right? So it’s not unethical, because it’s not benefitting you. I mean, it’s benefiting a cause you’re passionate about, but of course you’re lobbying for something that you feel is right…
I think (I don’t know the exact situation here) that it’s only unethical if it’s benefiting you personally, instead of the public you are supposed to be serving.

I think you are correct. It probably isn’t a question of ethics but of appearance. Looking at it the way you have outline it doesn’t seem unreasonable.
