We don’t have a great war in our generation, or a great depression, but we do, we have a great war of the spirit.

We have a great revolution against the culture. The great depression is our lives.

Hmm… sort of a good job quoting ‘Fight Club’, but its not true. There are numerous wars all over the world, there are unprecedented levels of poverty and starvation in many, many countries. There are atrocities against humanity in places like Somalia, Afganistan and Haiti.
If you are American, like many of the users of this site, we are involved in the seventh year of our first pre-emptive war ever, a war that has involved dozens of countries. We are also entering what seems to be the beginning of a pretty serious recession, with the housing market as bad as it has ever been, the oil that we are depending on more than ever also being more expensive than ever, and the country’s deficit greater than it has ever been before.

If we don’t have a depression or a war, it is just because we are not paying attention to those without lives as comfortable as our own.

We’re apparently involved in a war against melancholy.
