I completely understand your mind frame Miss. Right out of high school I went to a Community College, because it’s what my parents wanted for me. I hadn’t found my passion in life, and as you can guess I was unsuccessful in college. I got a “real” job and worked hard for almost 7 years just barely making ends meet. Shortly after meeting the man of my dreams (my hubby) I realized my true calling and started going to night school and working full time. I am currently up to my ears in debt, but am working hard to finish my B.S

These are my Pearls of Wisdom.
1.) You are only young once! As an almost 30 year old student, I am not able to do the all night cram sessions like the “kids” are.
2.)As a youngster if you can live with your parents while going to school it will save you THOUSANDS of dollars! I’ve estimated that renting and food while going to school is costing me $40,000 (over all 4 years) that in put on loans. So you have to pay interest!!!!
3.) In every class there is the one weird old person who asks a lot of questions about seemingly unrelated things… I have realized that person is ME…
4.)All of my encouraging cannot deny the fact that if you are not “ready” for college or don’t “want” to go to college, you won’t succeed, and it’s a very expensive learning experience.

Good luck!

i thought the same thing right out of high school. well.. i’m not THAT far out of high school still.
i dont think college is for everyone, and dont let anyone brainwash you into thinking that you need to go to succeed. if ‘that thing’ you want to do for the rest of your life requires you to go to school, then by all means, that is the BEST thing for you so do it.
as for me, i wasnt sure what that thing was that i would love spending the rest of my life doing. who does at 18?
i was going to take a semester off and go to juco but ended up taking off to scotland for a few months realizing everything i ever wanted in life. meeting people that know what they want and go for it! they dont wait around for it! it really inspired me.
i’m also open to the fact that i’m still young and that thing i want to do forever could change. but for now, i’m going for it. i’m not waiting. and it doenst require me to go to college so here i am working full time and saving up for my dreams.
if my dreams change, and they require college… then college is where i will be.
do you get what i’m trying to say? live YOUR life. and enjoy every second of it.
dont do things because society says you should. you’re not living for society. your living for you.

Don’t go if you’re not ready. You’ll just be wasting your time and your mother’s money. Her heart will be broken, of course, but not as much as if you go to college and then just spend four years partying or freaking out. Go when you are ready, and when you deserve the opportunity.

I took a couple of years off to just work and hang out with my friends, then I went back to school. It might put things in perspective if you do that. I’m lucky though, my parents are paying my tuition so its all a matter of your situation.

Although I counseled you (above) not to go to college if you are not ready—and I still mean it—there’s something else that I think it’s important for you to know, now that I see acting is one of your top ambitions.

I’m not informed about modeling, but I did spend much of my life in the theatre/arts, and I have to caution you that acting is a profession that takes tremendous intelligence, cultural understanding, and knowledge of literature. You don’t just stand up there and look good. You have to be able to understand different types of people, get inside their psyches, grasp where they are coming from (in their historical and social context, for example). The deeper and broader your education, and the wider your reading, the more tools you will have to draw upon as an actress. I also notice that your spelling and grammar are quite poor; these are things you should polish if you want to be taken seriously at auditions.

It has been said that an actor cannot play (and an author cannot create) a character more intelligent or learned than the actor or author. If you really aspire to make it in the world of acting, you will be extremely limited if you can only play high-school-educated characters.

Of course, many people have made it in acting without an advanced education—Hollywood in the ’30s was famous for snatching pretty girls off the street and turning them into starlets—but the profession has changed a lot. There’s a reason Jodie Foster, Sam Waterston, and Henry Winkler all went to Yale! Actors today are expected to know literature (including Shakespeare and other classical literature), theatre history, psychology, sociology, and a heck of a lot about the world. That is in ADDITION to what they learn in acting classes, at dance and movement studios, and through vocal coaching. Because a lot of work is done improvisationally, an actress must also be nimble of both mind and body. Most people straight out of high school would not even possess the vocabulary to grasp a lot of the material they would be working with as actors.

Try watching a few episodes of Law and Order and its spinoffs. I pick that series because, among acting folks, it’s known as one of the most prolific training grounds and sources of work for beginning to mid-level actors (and some stars, too, of course). How well do you understand the characters? Do you get the psychological nuances? Do you understand the cultural and societal references? Do you understand the historical and political context, the vocabulary?

Actors are NOT talking marionettes. They need to be able to internalize broad understandings to create credible characters. Also, it’s a tremendously competitive profession, so you want to have as many sharp tools as possible in your arsenal.

I wish you very much luck, Miss Beautiful, even if you do pursue this competitive and demanding career. (Being Miss Beautiful definitely HELPS!) You might want to rethink the importance of education in preparing for a life on the stage or screen, though.

I believe you really need college education. It is ok to take a break perhaps then you must continue later on. Trust me, I had been there. I graduated at the age of 30 at University. I had have good jobs but i regret not getting my degree sooner.
