In reality…I think I just have an odd way of thinking, and people have trouble keeping up…Unless there thought process is close to mine and I can talk about whatever and switch subects as much as I want and they understand it. Anyways…Its not that im taking her word seriously I am just wondering about the facts of sanity and insanity.

there is a wide range of sanity. it isn’t as strict and closed as you may believe. insanity is when you harm yourself. or someone else really. it is fine to be a little weird. we all are that. :)

You certainly don’t seem insane to me.
perhaps you’re prone to radical thinking
and this makes you appear insane too many people.
But you’re not. You’re just different.

one definition of insane is: selectively perceptive. take it as you will. the old wives tell ive heard is that if you think you might be crazy, you arent. being crazy or insane is like not even realizing that you are different or have quirks. i think that there are very few people who are actually insane, and a small minority that are mentally ill but curable.

There’s no simple, exact way to immediately know that you aren’t insane like, “if you think you’re insane, then you aren’t.” No real proof behind that; there are plenty of schizophrenics that turn themselves in for treatment every year.

However, if there were a simple, exact way to diagnose yourself as insane, the psychology business wouldn’t charge nearly so much as they do.

If you’re really worried, go see a professional. If you just got a weird comment from somebody but you’re not really worried about it, then don’t worry about it.

Really, I don’t like the word insane, to me it sounds so insulting. Anybody can have a mental problem, it’s an illness not a crime.

Well what kind of thoughts provoke you to think that you might be mentally unwell?

I personally believe theres two basic types of “insanity”. True “insanity”.

One being an inbalance in Mental thought.

The other being an inbalance in Mental action. Such as running naked down the Street screaming you’re a bumble bee.

Seems that you think you are having thoughts about being mentally unbalanced in your thoughts.

This could be a result of overthinking or having radical ideas.

If you could post some of your thoughts, that make you wonder if you are insane. That would be helpful.

And, if you are having thoughts, that do not seem normal for people to think, such as..

“How can the universe be” And then you go into a “self debate” determining how the universe can exist. or..

“What if we are all just results of our minds, and none of this is real”.

You are not “insane”. Just have an over active thought process, that seeks to know answers of possible outcomes on life. Thought such as this, generally is result of a childhood “trauma”, resulting in extreme thinking at a young age, or during the major pikes in development.

My two cents worth.

Can you function? Do you get to where you are supposed to be going each day and do what you are supposed to do? Are you able to take care of your own basic needs? When people ask you questions, can you give them answers that make sense?

Not to be rude, but a mentally unwell person can do that just as well as a “sane” person can.

I’m seeing alot of people classify “insane” as the people you see in horror movies, in the insane asylums. The peole that talk to themselves and scream for no reason.

Albeit, cases like those do exist but your average “insane” person, doesnt act that way. They act normal to you and I, Because the problem isnt in their actions, its in their thoughts. What they keep to themselves.

Hence why a large portion of serial killers/mass murderers, are described as every day ordinary people. Who go about life as anyone else is.

To readdress. The problem is in their thoughts, not their actions.

Good point, retro. I assumed, though, that the person was not referring to depression, but psychosis. People who are psychotic usually cannot fill their prescribed role in society. But, yes, mental illness is a lot broader than that, can can be far more subtle.

The other thing I am struggling with here is the notion that the division between sanity and insanity is not sharply defined. We all exist somewhere along a spectrum, and we even shift our positions on that spectrum from time to time.

Probably what we should all be telling this poster is that, if the question exists, get an evaluation by a professional.

I suppose I just have radical thinking or whatever. I just sometimes seem to do odd things. Things that any “normal” or “seemingly sane” person would not do. I don’t run down the streets naked saying “im a bummble bee” although that does sound funny…Anyways, I was just wondering it because the word “insane” gets thrown around so much these days. One can have odd thoughts or radical thinking and still be sane. One can do odd things and still be sane. However I have noticed that alot of people have been using the word insane to describe odd behaviour. So I was asking “How do you know if you’re really insane” Does that make any sense?

Hmm..How do you know if you’re really insane.

Honestly, I don’t believe this is something you can self declare.

All an insane person is…Is someone whose thought process is not accepted by society.

Whose concept of “normal” behavior and thought is not what the culture sees as being normal.

But these odd actings, are seemingly normal to an insane person. So they do not know what they think and how they act is not “normal”.

So I don’t think you can really know that you are insane, without someone declaring you so.

Taht was complicated lol

Haha.

Yes, I was hoping one of us would bring that up. Thinking my post was complicated enough I left it out.

You are correct in everyway possible, and I agree with you, but the head of an insane asylum will disagree.

Using the word “socially accepted” in place of normal.

My personal opinion, is that no person is truely insane, because they remain sane in their own minds.

Yes, but then again to live in this world we live in. Do we not all need a little bit of insanity to mix with our sanity just to understand what little we can of it?

We need a little outside insanity, as in insanity not of our creating.

Like..a crazy day at work, or a near accident, or a problem in life.

Creating insanity of your own to better understand sanity will only make you less sane.

Insanity, is genius uncontrolled and untamed. If that helps.

The joys of life. ^_^

It just sounds to me, that you think alot!.

As do I and many others.

When you get on a track of thought, you carry it until it just completely confuses the heck out of you.

Which I guess in return makes you wonder your sanity.

We are running in circles im afraid.

To answer your first question of “how can i know if im insane”

You can’t. You will always feel sane in your own mind.

Only true was is to see a doctor.

But know that thinking does not make you insane. Just really really confused.

^_^ its ok, and thanks for the insight. I suppose it is all just one big debate. You can go on and on about sanity and insanity, but it is just really how you percieve yourself I suppose. I mean there are those who are mentally ill, but that is still diffrent from insane. Hmmmm Its just a huge debate that will never be trully solved…Like polotics…-_- we wont go there
