house help: how do you keep a dog from digging? - Help.com

how do you keep a dog from digging?

stalag 17, the chunnel, boston’s big dig–they have nothing on my overgrown puppy. if she’s not escaping to the neighbor’s yard, she’s wallowing in dirt or mud (today) just because it’s fun. and then tracks it into the house! i can’t wash the muddy towels fast enough. if she digs to china i guess i could start importing merchandise and selling to wal-mart. :)

if attention were a galaxy, this pup would be a black hole.

if i’m gone away for several hours i leave both dogs out in the back yard. i can’t be there with a spray bottle all the time. i’ve tried shoveling poop into the holes under the fence, but that only works for awhile. and she finds new places to dig all over the yard.

hhmmmmm…. not really sure of a discipline action for a dog… lol.. is there certain areas in which she digs? such as near a fence? if so… try to tie her up outside near the house.. every time she digs.. take her over to the hole.. tell her in a strong voice.. no digging.. and then put her on the chain.. lack of running might help.. and if you do this every time she digs… putting her on the chain for maybe an hour at a time… she will get the hint.. i know that my dog use to growl at the other dogs when there was food around… so i bought a muzzle.. and every time she would do it.. i would put it on her for about 10 minutes.. after a while.. she stopped growling at the others…

but you have to remember… you have to tell them why you are doing it.. just like a child.. or they wont understand..

Try putting newspaper inside so you don’t have to clean it up! The way we did things was:
If he peed in the carpet we’d lock him outside till he was crying! Then I;d run out and cuddle him!!! But he quickly learnt. Very quickly. They learn what to do and what not to do when you punish them - i know its hard but its how they learn.
Good luck!

Sounds like a bored puppy! Having Terrier (Earth dogs) our back yard looks like the moonscape! I have a few suggestions for you.
1.) resign yourself to that fact that landscaping is being done for you, and that your the back yard will never be on the cover of “Better Homes and Gardens”… (I have)

2.) Distraction! Lots of toys that are more interesting than digging. Plastic Milk Bottles are (in my house) apparently far more interesting than digging

3.) Don’t leave the puppy outside unsupervised if you don’t want them to dig.

4.) Build a dig proof dog run. A concrete slab with chain link fencing around it makes a great dog run. For my dogs (terriers) a 3 foot fence works great.

I have heard of LOTS of conditioning methods, but the bottom line is that if you’re not there to enforce the rules, it’s going to be hard!
