Dear Help.Com Readers,

We have a static IP (which our ISP refuses to change for some reason?) which is now constantly under attack by someone.
My Sygate Firewall registers a constant 0.5 - 1.0 Kbs being blocked.
Until recently it was blocking every 3 seconds, now the attack is constant.
Is there any thing I can do here? It’s very frustrating thinking that one day this vandal may compromise my system. Surely it’s only a matter of time?
Any and all help appreciated!
Cheers! M

Yes, tell your ISP to change the address. It’s absolutely unacceptable that you can’t get it changed. Get on that phone and get angry.

As a home consumer, you can’t be expected to be able to defend or circumvent this kind of attack — it is your ISP’s job to do so.

If all else fails, turn your modem off for a day or two and see if the attacker gets bored with hitting a blank wall.

You sygate firewall… what exactly is it telling you? I garentee that it’s actually not serious.
“This communication attempt may have been a port scan, or simply one of the millions of unsolicited commercial or network control messages that are routinely sent out over the Internet. Such unsolicited messages are often called Internet background noise.”
My firewall reports millions of “blocked attacks” but they are really not attacks. I’m not sure about your case but firewalls usually block lots of things that are constant

Trust me hackers can tell which computers have firewalls. There are millions of pcs out there that don’t have firewalls. No one is going to spend more than a couple minutes trying to get into a firewall “if it is actually an attack.” Even a windows firewall is decent enough unless you have some serious data that anyone would actually want
