I have a friend who has not filed a tax return in over a decade.

I have been hounding him about this for years. The proverbial fan is about to be hit, and I would like some advice. What does he need to do?

If This person can not afford an attorney, or other legal services such as pre-paidlegal.com, then i would suggest that they first contact all employers for the time mention and try to locate every possible w-2 he can, then he must try to gather any documents such as medical bills, work expenses, and any other thing that is viable for doing his taxes, reciepts, etc. Then they will need to download all the appropriate forms for the past years. available on irs.gov. After that it’s all date sorting and following the instructions for the forms for each individual year. If money is owed then he can work out a payment plan with the irs to pay the the amount due.

What about I-9’s as opposed to W-2’s? What if the main source of income for some years was fee-based compensation as opposed to payroll, with deductions already taken out? Will what hits the fan smell worse?

when it hits the fan your friend will need to go off the grid. once your friend has adapted to this they will become far better off then yourself. i envy your friend.

First off, if he doesn’t owe taxes, then he’s not required to file (although he can’t get his refund if he doesn’t.)

Assuming that he does owe taxes, I wouldn’t wait for the IRS to track him down, as they are inclined to be merciless in those circumstances. If, however, they don’t have him on the radar yet I would call them and try to work something out, as they can be much easier to negotiate with.

Good Luck!
