god help: How Do You Define Faith? - Help.com

How Do You Define Faith?

I was asked quite a few times to describe Faith
in GOD.

This is an excellent quesiton.

My answer in the past was to use the following analogy of
driving a motor vehicle……

When it’s time to stop….

You naturally, without thinking about it, without
worrying about it, without doubting that when
you apply your brakes…………

You’re going to stop.

But after reading this verse:

Jeremiah 1:5 ¶ Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out
of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

It dawn on me what Faith in GOD is, should be and can be…..exist on a higher plane of our
hearts by understanding Faith in a different way.

“GOD began walking down the road of my life. As he came across a bump in the road, GOD gently
placed a solution next to the bump. He continued down the road of my life. In the middle of the
road was a large ditch, GOD paused and placed a solution down. With each solution, all I had to
do is to remember to pray at each point in my life and the answer will manifested in the
physical realm. GOD continued…..on the left side of my road was a prayer, GOD paused and placed
the answer on the right side of the road. When GOD arrived at the end of the road, He turned
around…………..and I was born!”

Zechariah 9:12
¶ “Return to your Fortress, O Prisoners of Hope; This day
I will restore double to you.”

I define faith as belief with the ability to suspend logical analysis in favor of that particular belief. Essentially faith, in my eyes, is belief based upon the merits of what the belief entails and not outside details. Faith is the ability to suspend reason and your senses in favor of something that you have no definitive proof of. It could be faith that your wife is telling the truth, in could be faith in an invisible bearded sky-daddy with magic powers.

I see faith as putting all your trust and hope in’God’. Unlike wishing, leaving it up to fate, blowing in the wind opportunities. They may or may not happen, just like prayers ,but combined with the power of prayer,(un like wishing), it will be more inclined to happen.I’m the type of person that doesn’t like to do things in vain ,so with an attitude of achieving effectiveness, I go right to the source. Thanks for asking :)

I see faith as a meaning for both belief and trust, generally.

But going deeply, I see it more as a belief or trust in something that is a risk, or may not actually exist, no proof etc. Such as the term ‘Leap of faith’ implies. Its a risk.

i think faith is the spiritual word for hope,as snar says a suspension of reason ,just a possibilty that you pursue with all heart and mind , belief in what you hope will be

Someone else here on another post equated faith to trust, for me that is the definition of Faith. I’ve seen the power of God, so I put my trust in him.

“Faith is to believe what you do not see. The reward of faith is to see what you believe.”

“If we did not have rational souls, we would not be able to believe.”

Saint Augustine.

I like those two, they resonate with me.

I agree with this definition from Snar: “Faith is the ability to suspend reason and your senses in favor of something that you have no definitive proof of.”

And I really like this quote from Saint Augustine that Tictactom has mentioned: ““Faith is to believe what you do not see. The reward of faith is to see what you believe.” Quite amusing and true.

Faith to me is much like having a postitve attitude all the time. It’s a very strong innate conviction that you deserve to be happy and to have your basic needs met. It’s knowing that as long as you do all you can to achieve your goals, life will help you get there. Faith is also trusting that although you do not always understand all the mysteries of life, in the end, beyond our limited human perception, there is a reason for everything and it’s all for the best.

Well… faith is hard to define. And it’s much more than anything we can write to try and describe it. It’s a belief, an attitude, a feeling that, I can tell you from my own experience, makes life easier and so much more beautiful.

If everyone on this planet had faith… wow!… this would be an incredible and awesome world!

WOW! Wonderful responses! All of these definitions give me a 3-D view of how Faith is believed and embraced. With everyones definition of what Faith means to them gives me the exact feeling I receive when walking into a Botanical Garden.

doubting your prayers is like doubting your faith in the lords ability to affect an outcome, faith must be nurtured and remain in the affirmitive, never given anything less, prayers will always be answered by he who seeks only the faith of ones to believe they can,for all must try to build their faith upon faith upon faith upon faith till nothing remains but the truth of it inside oneself an unquestionable and steadfast knowing, unmoved and solid in its foundations where nothing and nobody can destroy

I didn’t know where that was coming from then your incomplete post (which i didn’t know was incomplete) mentions “go!” what do you think a prudent person would conclude?
So if i may, you jumped to conclusions too quickly.

to quote from the movie “Miracle on 34th street”

“Faith is believing in something when common sense tells you not to” (meant in a good context)

Let us take the idea in philosophy that the only argument which is, for all extensive purposes, irrefutable, is “I think therefore I am” meaning, the only thing that you can prove exists, is yourself, and only to yourself, everything else is sensation. Throw in some science, and we are not even a constant, but a process, so nothing is provable at all, least of all god which we do not even have empirical evidence for.

I see it like this….God left us a powerful tool…his word. So, the more you study and apply his word the closer you become to his word and him. So faith works hand in hand with that. What I’m saying is the more you believe in his word the more faith you build in him. I don’t know how you’re going to take that, but I think it makes perfect sense.
