I cant quit smoking!
Iv been smoking for two years now and i want to stop before it really badly effects my body. Iv already started to notice i get out of breath easily. I tried to quit before but i didnt have the will power to keep it going. Is there any easy way to quit? I just crave for them tooo much. Iv tried the chewing gum and i dont find that helps, and iv also used the patches! My boyfriend quit and he says it was easy. Does anyone else no why i find it so hard to quit? Any tips? xxxxxxxxxxx

Some people have addictive personalities and some have a biological predisposition to addictive things. As for whats best to try there are many thing. The idea of patches and gum is to wean yourself off gradually. This is a slower process than going cold turkey but most people find that they are less likly to crack during. I think you should keep using the patches but what you need to do is remove all your habits to smoking. SO remove every single one from the house and every where so you physically cant have one. If there is friends that smoke around you or places and times that you normally smoke avoid them and those situations whilst you are trying to get off them. Try and find something to releive the cravings too some activity or something you can do to take your mind off and get releif (im tempted to say chocolate but i dont want you eating tonnes of that lol). I think a good trick is when you feel that you cant take it any more tell someone and stick with them. If your by yourself when you really need one you are more likley to right but if you go and hang around with your bf or some one they can physically stop you until the craving passes. Good luck hope it works out
Thanks alot, i will try those ideas! I like the idea of trying to take your mind off it and it does tend to be when im by myself i want one. I do have alot of friends who have recently started smoking. When i see them with one it just makes me wanna pull one out myself. Do u recon cutting down works at all?
I found an easy way to quit. I tried many stop smoking techniques, but like you I could not quit until I fell onto this. I smoked and smoked… until I nearly died of a heart attack. When I had my heart attack, I was able to quit smoking in 30 seconds. It’s not the best way, I admit… but it was very effective.

cutting down is like using patches in some sense becuase it is trying to wean your brain off the chemicals it craves by reducing there amount. so yess it can help and can work to slowly decrease the no. you have a day. But i dont think its a great option by itself. THe more of these things you use the better really. SO if you are smoking say 20 a day reducing that to 10 is a good idea try that for a couple of weeks but use the patches too. The biggest problem with reducing the no. tho over stopping completly is that there are still cigs around in the house and on you, so if you have moments of weakness its too easy to just light up. So if your comsumption is hughe like 40 50 or more then yeh reducing for a bit first is good. but if its not, id go for not having any around. Remeber you will only be drawing the process out right… As for your friends smoking around you, that can be the hardest thing. If they are your friends try asking them nicely if they can wait till your out of the room or until your not around as much as possible, im sure they will understand (or tho you might have to remind them at times). THe other alternative if they are all smoking is to excuse yourself if a few of them are lighting up and go talk to one that hasnt. hope that helps

Gosh poor you! The thing im scared of most is going through something like that. But i agree the shock of it all is very effective.

but use the patches too
I didnt know you could use the patches at the same time as smoking! thanx x
richard is rich a big kick up the backside like that is sometimes the wake up call you need to force your will power. but there are other things you can do like adversion ideas. now most people think this means force yourself to smoke hundreds until you are so sick you will never want another one in your life and that can work but you cant really do it to yourself you have to have someone make you and know the best way to do it. But there are other adversion things you can do. The who idea of adversion is to assosiate smoking with something bad or you dislike to stop you doing it. so you could try ……….
1) every time you have a cig the whole time think about how you are slowly killing yourself and causing untold damage to yourself (harsh but if you force yourself to think these thoughts you will assosiate it
2) every time you have a cig make yourself do it in a uncomfortable place eg. outside in the cold (the temperature or discomfort will make you want to get out of there asap and not want to go for a cig cus you will have to go out int he cold)
3) during every cig you have to smoke make yourself do something that you dont like eg. if you have a food you really hate that makes you gag (can be anything a certain vegertable or condiment) anything that you really hate and buy it in especially so every time you take a puff you have to eat some. trust me that will make you stop.
another example is what a friendof mine did, which was to by some of that stuff that stops you biting your nails cus it tastes bad and she dipped all her cig in it, so everytime she smoked one she got the most god awfull taste in her mouth.
So anyway lots of ideas there hope it helps
yeh i wasn’t sure about patches with smoking, but read the lable first obviously and maybe the gum might be ok instead
mayb you need to go to the doc and c what they say . thats what my mom did and 2 weeks later she stop

Wow! That type of stuff could really work. I remember once when i tried to quit i smoking i smoked herbal ****, i was quickly put off the idea of smoking them.

I did go to a doctor at one point and all they did was hand me a leaflet of a class i could go to. As much as i want to stop i hate the thought of standing up in a room of people saying all my smoking habbits. But at the same time maybe i should go see a different doctor aswell? A different doctor maybe able to help better.
well my advice would be to try everything and anything. The more you can do to help yourself the better right and the more things you try the more likly you are to find what works for you. The main things tho are to remove temptation,( by removing cigs so you cant get to them and by not falling into your routines of smoking) and to have people around to support you or help you when ur getting cravings. DOnt forget you can always come on here if your alone and need someone to take your mind off it and convince you not to. Other than that all these other things are just to help take the edge off ease the transistion and to reprogram yourself. So good luck let us know how it goes
Thankyou to every who has helped, i think ill combine all the ideas together. To start off with i think ill cut down. Then after that ill eat a marmite sandwhich everytime i go out for one. Ughr i hate marmite. Then ill go to a doctor and ask if they can offer anymore help. Ill use the patches when im finally not smoking any, throw all of my cigs away and then hopefully i will be fit and healthy for the summer! :)
I quit the day I found out I was pregnant. I think when you have a reason to stop, it makes it easier. Like Richard with the heart attack.
My husband said he would quit when we had kids well, the oldest is 9 and he has not been able to quit. I think you have to just have the right mind set. He always has excuses. No excuse, as long as you make excuses why you can’t quit, then you never will. You have to go into the decision knowing you are done with smoking.
When I got pregnant, I knew I was done.
When Richard had his heart attack, he knew he was done.
Make the decision to quit and know you are done.

I agree, making excuses for example im going through a stressfull time just sets me back. But there never is the right time to quit. I need to find a reason to quit for. Thanx x
just go to another one
hey there i bet you have herd it all about cancer and what not but here it is again it can cause lung cancer heart cancer even breast cancer and it can even kill little kids that breath in what you breath out go for the gums and patches and classes ya know every cigaret cost you 11 minutes of your life oh and you could try cigars for a while befor you quit as a subsatute because there not adictive and not half as bad for you
do not worry and dont get stressed over it if you go to your local doctor then ask for the nicorette chewing gum im not joking it works a treat but if it s not the one for you try doing something to take your mind of it and just think to yourself if you think about smoking just say to yourself i want to live for as lonng as i can because i only get on chance and i am better than a stupid *** or there is one more solution that i would highly reccomend take a ciggerete and just say when i smoke this thats it that is my last *** but just see how long it takes you before you have that one last *** i am alwase here if you want to talk
your non smoker
