Love help: The Future of Help - Help.com

The Future of Help

Times suggested I put up a post announcing my intentions, and as an easy way to keep track of common questions and answers.

This is just the start and I’ll elaborate more over the coming days and weeks.

Q: Who the hell are you?

A: I’m a developer with CNET networks. That means I work on the code, and server powering help.com, and I’m also learning to love this little (but growing) community. That also means I’m an Admin and I occasionally patrol the chat and will moderate/ban any improper behavior.

Q: Where are you?

A: I’m in San Francisco, California.

Q: Will you be adding new features to help.com, and fixing bugs.

A: Yes. Yes. Over the last few months help.com has been orphaned, but over the next coming months I’ll be improving the site, making this faster, and fixing any bugs that come up. I’m the point of contact for pretty much anything (bugs, site abuse…etc)

Q: Do you work on other sites/projects at CNET?

A: Yes, but I can’t really go into that.

Q: What was the deal with Consumating.com? Why was it shutdown? Why are they angry? What are they doing here?

A: Consumating was a social networking site originally started as a dating site for 20 somethings — but it eventually morphed into a general late teens / 20s social site with a quirky twist.

(Trivia: help.com was started many years ago as a tech support site, and news group aggregator — and see what that has changed into).

Over the years Consumating was shuffled around from group to group and all the people that were originally involved moved on. The site was slowly falling into disrepair and no group wanted to “step up” and take on fixing it, so the choice was eventually made to shut the site down.

Users were given a few weeks notice, and CNET released all the content they had uploaded as well as every single line of programming code that was “consumating” so people could set up their own clones elsewhere.

We (CNET) did the right thing, allowing the users to recreate their community in an environment where it would get all the love and attention it deserves (that we weren’t giving it).

When the clock was up, Consumating was shutdown and all traffic redirected to help.com. Help and Consumating had a lot in common code-wise (friends, shouts, posts/replies).

Consumating had no moderation, while Help.com is heavily moderated. There was obviously a culture clash — with some angry Consu users trolling, posting rude comments…etc. They will (if they haven’t already) move on to their new community.

Q: What about the future of help.com

A: It is as wide open as our imaginations. I want your feedback, thoughts and opinions.

That’s it for now. I’ll be commenting on this thread, and editing it as new things come up. I look forward to hearing from all of you.

Q: where is the code for consumating.com that you mentioned in this post
A: The code is hosted here: http://code.google.com/p/clonesumating/ and is written in perl, geared towards a MySQL database. I’m sure a community will spring up around this newly release code.

Just in case it’s worth something, my absolute favourite feature on this site is how you can watch replies appear. More sites should have this.

That seems to be the system backup — I’m working on fixing it but it may take a few days — I’m sorry it has slowed you down, I’ll do my best to fix it quickly.

Oh, uh, why did help.com automatically put me as living in Quebec, Canada when I first signed up. I didn’t fill in that I lived in Quebec, and now I don’t know how to change it.

I like your openness to answering questions and your candid way of communicating.
I would like to see the site be a little more geared towards the actual helping part, not only a way to make new friends and online cliques, as it seems it might be geared toward with the ‘friends list’ and chat etc.

Although I might ask a question another user has posed: Do you think you’ll be able to keep up with improving the site as well as all the maintenance that is requred.. The last admin didnt seem to be able to.

Hi…
Welcome to help.
I hope you are more talkative, would be nice to see an admin mingle once in a while.

On another note, I wanted to know how possible it would be to add a function in where we could edit our replies and not just the posts we make, I know we can preview them but maybe being able to edit them after we had posted them would be helpful :)

if they did that, people indebates would change their replies to seem right after they were shown to be wrong, and it would give everyone a headache figuring it out

I just thought though, it could be the same type of edit as with the post, where it shows what was previously posted, rather than getting rid of the old reply totally you could click to see what it said…?

I agree completely.. sometimes the posts and chat veer off to arguments, criticizing and judgement long before any help is ever given.. WOuld be nice to see something set in place to facilitate actual help.. possibly daily quotes, or suggestions sponsored by the site suggesting ways to help.. something like that.

So does this mean now we’re going to have stuff DONE to this site? And things are going to get sorted and we’re not going to be left to run it by ourselves? If so, WOOOO!
…This is the start of a new era *sniff*

That is entirely inimical to the free spririt of the internet, and will kill this community.

true, it would be allot more dull and dead inside

I would like to see the rules made clearer that would be better.
I mean I have seen people being warned and banned over rules being bent to fit others… but then that is another issue I suppose.

possibly. Im just saying that the arguments the 90% of the post turn into is also completely antithetical to what help.com is about.

Is it the general consensus of Help users that Consumating users “move on” to another site? Just wondering, because not all of us are here to troll or post rude comments. Some of us would simply like to have a sense of community comparable to what we had on Consumating.

Bizzchell — a local! I want to be able to offer the consu crowd what they want here — without disrupting what already exists — that will take time — and there were some very angry people who were intent on making life difficult here before moving on

hmmm.
seems interesting. seems like good news in my opinion.

however, i worry about what will happen to the community of Help.com.
in my opinion, (and i know little to nothing of the magical internetz, my experience is limited to running a VERY small forum) the way that Help.com works is a delicate balance. i’m referring to the actual helping, not the servers or any of that jibber jabber.
the community here is (again in my opinion) a unique one, and to see it change due to site changes would be sad.

ALSO
i think one of the most pressing issues at the moment is the fact that there is not a fast enough deletion of troll’s posts, insults and darnright unpleasant replies.

well consumater dudes, just intigrate into the site, but always remember
help is not
nor will it ever be
a consumating clone.
it is its own site, own community, and has its own sense of being
don’t screw with what it is

SO you want to change what we have to fit them in?

So they were lucky enough to have a message up for weeks saying that they were being relocated…shut down etc.
Why were we not given the same respect?
Letting us know that this was to happen?
We just gotit shoved in our face the other day with no warning what so ever…
Soone rule for one and another rule for the rest, I see how this will go.
