It depends on what you are going to let her use the computer for, and how much freedom you are going to let her have.

I have worked in both a school and a childcare centre over the last two years and at both, we let the 5 year olds (and under!) use the computer. It is a great tool for developing many skills, and with computers sticking around for a long time, computer skills are very important for children to acquire, and what better time than when they are 5!

There are many educational games you can get for her to play with, games that improve math and vocabulary skills, as well as typing and hand eye co-ordination using the mouse. I would probably advise at this stage to supervise her at all times when using the internet, and perhaps use a filter so she can only go to several pages such as the ABC kids page, or educational pages. http://www.factmonster.com/ is a great and interesting site aimed at furthering children’s general knowledge. Good luck, and I can’t see a big argument for not letting her, so just have fun with it! :)

In an ever changing world computer literacy is just as important as traditional literacy, so providing that she is supervised and the content is age specific their shouldn’t be a problem. It could also be a fun thing for the two of you to do together. :)

Make it family time when she uses the computer. Just you being involved in her childhood is great, so, yes, your daughter should be allowed to use the computer, with you, by her side.
