i need help.

ok, so here’s the story. we believe that my boyfriend has a hernia, and has had it for several months now. the pain is so bad that he cannot go to work, or participate in normal activities like he used to. but the problem is - he has no health insurance, so unless he wants to incur large bills, he is unable to get this checked out and taken care of. he works 40 hours a week as an accountant - but it is a temp job, so that is why he can’t get insurance. also, getting insurance on his own is way too expensive - from 600 a month up. so it’s like we’re stuck - he makes too much money to qualify for medicaid or family health plus - but too little to afford it on his own. does anyone have any suggestions? who can i call, where can i go to? the pain is so bad that he even misses out on work occassionally - which means less money, etc. he is getting frustrated looking for a way to get affordable health insurance, and i think he’s even getting depressed. i’m getting my masters in social work and this is so frustrating running into so many dead ends and not being able to help someone i care so much about. please, if you have any suggestions at all, please help me. he lives in westchester county if that makes a differnce. so i’m looking for affordable/free health insurance. thanks so much

Who is ‘we’? And if he is your boyfriend why do these things sound like the problems of a married couple? If you care about him so much you could always quit your schooling, and get a job to help out. If your not married to the man, and your sleeping with him, and you are now stuck between your own educational goals and his welfare, shame, shame, oh shame on you.

You need to reevaluate your goals in life. This is what happens when you don’t commit yourself to someone in marriage, you become confused about where your loyalties lie. Marry him and take responsibility as a wife, or leave him and never look back. You alone will bear the weight of your decision.

I live in Canada. Everyone has access to proper medical care. It’s fully subsidized.
I can’t believe that the richest country in the world has such a problem
with medical. You have the very best doctors, medical facilities, etc.
You simply need to bring in universal medical plan.please people vote for the right people. Demonstrate your wealth in compassion for others.

procedures?

Can he sign up for regular medical plans at $600 and up.
Stay on the medical plan until he gets his operation finished and then quit?
is that legal?

You mentioned that you think he has a hernia?have you gone to a doctor?
surely it’s not very expensive to just see a GP?some hernias can easily
be pushed back in to fix them. Don’t try this yourself you need to go to a doctor.
And have him do it.

the bottom line is that he needs medical care. it sucks to be in debt but it sucks even more to be in pain & have it lead to more problems. believe me, my family has its share of medical bills (unsecured debt!) but at least we have our health. payment plans are available for medical procedures, even if the bills go to collections- which truly isn’t the end of the world, though it can be stressful and frustrating. there are practitioners everywhere who work on sliding scales… consult your local resource center… you know, where you’ll be after your degree :-) even if he doesn’t qualify, they may be able to refer you to someone who can help.
