How to get your puppy to ’sit’

Ok, so I am taking a fantastic puppy training class, and discovered some great advice for how to get a puppy to ’sit’. Here are the steps:

Make sure you have the puppy’s attention. Call his/her name, and having a treat in hand at the time doesn’t hurt.  Once you have the puppy’s attention, hold the treat out right in front of its nose, but obvioulsy don’t let the pup eat it. When you are certain you have the pup’s attention, slow start to raise it straight up above its nose. It should follow the treat with its head and nose and eventually put its butt on the ground. As soon as the puppy’s butt hits the ground, give him/her the command ‘Sit!’ along with the treat. Praise the puppy effusively too. You’ll need to do this many times, but it works!

Good info! I was curious how to train a dog to ’sit’.

I wonder if this would work on a 1.5 year old dog.

Good question fusionplus32.

I am wondering if there is a cutoff point for a dog’s learning ability.

You know what they say, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”.

pinch collars can help too when trying to re-inforce training commands.
