Can you change the resolution of a digital picture?
(after it is already taken and uploaded). If so how? I have a Macintosh and not sure how to do this.

Where were you?

Yes you can. Increasing the resolution will not be easy, but there are techniques. Reducing the resolution is no problem. Do you have anything other than preview for mac? and what exactly do you want to do with the picture? What is it for?
Kei,
I have Iphoto and Preview, that is it, unfortunately. I wish I could afford photoshop. Anyway, I want to make them bigger and then print them to sell. When I go to Walgreens.com or sites like this it says it doesn’t recommend me printing the picture at 8 x10 size or higher and that I need to change the resolution.
it all depends on the original resolution. If the original resolution is too small, then it will not produce good results.
In Preview:
open up the file
select “tools” (from the top menu)
then “adjust size…”
You can change the size units from pixels to inches then increase the size
and also changing the pixels per inch may help.
It may not produce the desired results, but give it a try.
You may want to try out some other graphics packages for mac which are free and quite good.
Gimp is the first one i recommend. you will need to have something called x11 installed on you mac to use this. it may not be already installed on the mac, but is on the install cd’s. Let me know if you need help with that. Gimp may be able to increase resolution with better effects.
Another one is seashore which is not as good as gimp, but is easier to use.
Try them out. They are free, so you have nothing to lose.
Ummm, I went to Preview, and the tools and then there was no adjust size in there.
I will check out Gimp and let you know.
Thank you,
Mary
which version of the MacOS do you have? Sorry I should have asked that before. Not sure if the old version of MacOS has that option for preview.
Version 10.4.11
Ok, I don’t think that one has the feature. Give the other packages a go. Seashore is the most simple to use, Gimp has the best results.
Then I will try Gimp. I prefer the best results over easy
Thank You
I get this message when I try to click on the install from Gimp:
Gimp.app requires X11 from the “Optional Installs” package on the OS X install disc.
? Help
There is a icon that says Turn on x11 Focus Follows Mouse in the Gimp File. I clicked this but nothing happens. Yipes. Is there a way to install this x11?
Yes, do you still have the OS install discs? There will have been some cd’s that you got with the computer, two of them. x11 should be on the second cd. If you put it into the mac, and select optional extras or something like that, x11 should be one of the options. Try installing it from there.
I don’t have the discs, the computer was given to me by a friend. I will check to see if it is somewhere on the computer but probably not.
In that case I think Seashore will be your best bet. I will try and see if it’s possible to download x11 from the internet.
I have a laptop but would also like to know how to enlarge photos so that I can order a canvas print in a larger size. The current photo is 720 x 540 pixels and it won’t even let me order an 8 X 10. Have any suggestions that will help?
