How is algebra used to solve a real life problem?

I don’t take algebra, but just on looking at it I don’t really see how it is useful …is it?

Maths in general brings order to the mind.

Well if the problem is not of a mathematical nature and is not related to algebra then you can’t apply it. But having order in mind just makes finding solutions to the problems easier.

It teaches you how to think through a problem and solve it. Usually people who are good at math are good problem solvers.

personally you can apply algebra to any situation.

Algebra is about solving problems. Admittedly it’s with numbers, but once you get the mindset it makes other things in life easier to solve

I did too. It took a few good teachers and a lot hard work on my part, but I pulled through. Thankfully once you pass you can forget it.

The one thing I’ve retained is how to examine each part of a problem and find out where to start fixing it. Kind of like a puzzle. If you find all the outside pieces things go a little faster in doing the rest of the puzzle

I am pretty good at math, but yet algebra seems unneeded

I never saw a reason for it until I realized how much it does translate into life which was after high school

Lets see….you want to order pizza for the gang. Each pizza has 8slices, the guys will eat 4 slices the girls will eat 2 slices. There are 4 guys and 3 girls. How many pizzas should you have?

Algebra is used everyday in almost every situation. It is one of the most important concepts you can learn. With out it we wouldn’t have this computer nor the internet. Not to mention algebra is the basis for calculus and of course linear algebra.

Just remember when your cash register breaks down you will need math to give the customer change. If you know algebra though you wont have to be behind the register to begin with.

So learn the **** math and remember it because almost all good jobs use algebra.

there is a formula called the power formula. It is
P=VxA where p= the power in Watts
V= volts and A= amps
if we have 100 W light bulb and we try to run it on 120 V
and how much current does it take in amps. We need algebra to solve this
because the formula is not in the right order.
So we use algebra to change the formula into A=P/V
and for our example this would be 0.83=100/120
so we find out that our 100 W light bulb draws 0.83 in amps on a standard
120 V wall plug circuit.
The maximum current you can take from a wall plug is usually 15 amps.
Using the formula p=VxA we see 120v X 15a=1800 w
so from a standard wall plug we can draw up to 1800 watts.
Before the circuit breaker blows.

There are many formulas like this which we can use practically every day.
Another one is the distance formula d=Vxt where d=distance v= the velocity
and t= amount of time.at 10 miles an hour for two hours we would go how far?
10×2=20 miles. And so on.

My math teacher has a poster in her room of types of math you need for different careers. I will look and try to find algebra!

work = force x distance
work = (External Pressure) x (Change in Volume)

There is actually quite a lot of calculus involved but for simple systems work can be used in algebra this way.

you own a business that sells a product. The profit can be found using the equation ax^2+bx+c=0

You want to put some savings away, not sure if you want a CD or a high yield savings account, then you need to use the interest equation. P = C (1 + r/n)^nt

You go to a restaurant, and want to give a 15% tip, how much money do you give?

You have a party, 18 people are coming, men can eat 4 slices, women 3 slices. There are 7 men coming to the party, how much pizza to you buy (I HATE WHEN PEOPLE CANT DO PIZZA MATH!!!)

I can keep going, But I guess I’ll leave with this one….Learn algebra because you can! That’s what smart people do, learn.

omg honestly
are u saying this caant be done with a 1 second google search on: “yeild calculator” or “bank intrest”.
Oh please, algebra is a waste of the future and you could read a book on how to problem solve better instead of taking four years of stupid hs math.

someone has to write the code for that calculator. Besides, that four years of math have made me faster than that calculator, and more accurate. Oh, and it will make me a 100k and up year.

Reading a book wont give you that degree.

It’s quite useful. Try writing a word problem to solve a real life problem. I’ll show you.
Should you put it off until tomorrow or do it today?
This part goes on top of the dividing line: (50(1-10 level of disaster if you put it off)) over how long you can out it off in # of days. Take that and add how pissed will your girlfriend be if she has to do it (1-10 scale) then add (unpleasantness on a 1-10 scale)(on a -5 to 5 scale will the task get easier if you let it sit *that’s the negative part* or harder *the positive part of the scale*)
Then divide the lot by:
(your typical level of procrastination 1-10 with ten being thesis due monday and you’re doing it sunday night)(likelihood your task will be done by someone else if you put it off 1-10 scale)(unpleasantness on a 1-10 scale)

If the answer is greater than one you should do it today. less than one and you’re good.
give it a shot.
