The belly button is in an area that heals slowly, however, because it’s right where the body twists and turns, which slows the healing process. It also doesn’t get as much air circulation because it is covered much of the time. It can take up to six months or even a year for a belly button piercing to heal completely.

All body piercings will have some drainage during the first several days. This is because you have basically given your body a puncture wound, and your body will bleed for a while, and then have drainage of some fluids as it heals. These fluids are actually good for you, as they keep the area moist and clean and will wash away some of the dirt and germs that might otherwise stay in the area.

Bleeding should stop within a few hours or the first day and be only small amounts. Often it will look watery. Drainage will be mostly a clear, watery discharge, although it can sometimes be somewhat white in color. The drainage will form “crusties” around the jewelry that can be washed off with warm, soapy water when you clean your piercing each day.

A piercing is infected when the discharge is either green or yellow. Also, if the area becomes swollen or inflamed again after the initial swelling has subsided. Any time you see green or yellow pus or discharge; you should see a doctor and get appropriate medical treatment. It won’t necessarily mean you have to remove your piercing; you may simply have to take a course of antibiotics. If the area becomes red and inflamed with red streaks radiating out from the area, see a doctor right away.

23I hope you don’t take this the wrong way. I know this feels important, but you’ll learn through your life that even bits of your body going wrong isn’t the end of the world.

And you’ll also learn that it sucks to be told you don’t know anything. That’ll last until your 35.

Trust me. If it’s infected then you’ll have to get creative and deal with it in which ever varying way you see necessary: first aid, doctor, hospital. Despite what they tell you you are not stupid. Listen and look at your body and *think*. That gut instinct you got there, trust me, it’s right.

7. What should I clean my piercing with?

Today most professional piercers agree that the best way to clean a fresh piercing is with a mild antibacterial soap. These should not contain perfumes or dyes, which can irritate a piercing and lead to discomfort or an allergic reaction. There are a few on the market that are specifically designed for body piercings, including Provon® and Satin®.

After cleaning, you should follow up with a sea salt water soak. Sea salt is available at natural health stores, piercing and tattoo studios and a variety of other stores. The sea salt solution helps soothe the area and draw impurities out of the wound to promote faster healing. H2Ocean is an excellent pre-mixed sea salt solution that can be sprayed on for ease of use. It’s highly recommended by many professional piercers and is convenient especially if you’re traveling or on the go.

To the poster - I wasn’t trying to scare you. As a previous poster said: if it’s yellow/green and discharging it’s infected. Otherwise you’re infected.

The point I was trying to make is that growing up with the media how it is, everybody is geared towards thinking a minor injury is a disease or a deadly wound.

We’re animals - no different from all the other pieces of meat our there walking around trying to spread our DNA. The only difference is that we invented a complex social system to try and weed out the loosers (another post entirely).

You got a piercing. It’s a bit sore. Listen to your inner self. If you were in the middle of nowhere with no backup and two score worries on your sholders - would it be a priority? No. So be cool and just deal with it. It won’t kill you.

I cleaned it with bactine, they gave it to me there
i believe it was ok in a couple of months
but i actually had to take it out when i was almost 20 because i got pregnant and the baby made it hurt
which by the way if you ever decide in life to let the thing go and you don’t want it anymore, you’ll have a nice little scar to remind you

the best way to clean a piercing is with hot salt water. Do NOT EVER use hydrogen peroxide or bactine. you will heal the surface but an infection can fester inside. Salt Water draws out infection and has been used by piercers for hundreds of years. A piercing that goes through fatty tissue like your belly button has a higher liklihood of infection. Do you feel any lumps or sore spots under the piercing? If you do then you could have a build-up of lymph fluid. These are the white blood cells that go to a wound and help it heal. This fluid can become infected. The crusting is normal and wanted.
You can clean your wound several times a day without taking a bath. Get a small cup of hot water with a teaspoon of salt and carefully place it over your bellybutton and let it set for a couple minutes. It will draw out any infection and aid the healing process.

as far as washinq it use dial!
it works the best mine was doin the same thinq yours
is! noo worries it’s only healinq!
step by stepp cleaninq:

1. Wash your hands with antibacterial soap.
2. Wet the piercing with plain water.
3. Put a few drops of antibacterial soap on the piercing and work them into a lather with a cotton bud.
4. Try to loosen any crusted discharge and float it off the jewelry and your skin with the cotton bud.
5. Leave the antibacterial soap on the piercing for two minutes while rotating the jewelry back and forth, allowing the disinfectant to penetrate the piercing.
6. Rinse with water and air dry thoroughly.

* Also of proven effectiveness is soaking the navel in saline solution. This takes 10 -15 minutes but is well worth the effort.

The step-by-step procedure is:

1. Put 50mls of Saline solution in a small glass tumbler (ideally contact lens sterile saline solution, or alternatively a pinch of salt in a glass of cooled boiled water).
2. Holding the glass upright, bend over the glass and press the rim around your piercing.
3. Lie down on your back and hold the glass against your navel for 10 to 15 minutes. Read, listen to music…
4. Stand , bend over, and release the glass.
5. Afterwards, dry thoroughly with a clean tissue or cotton bud.

only clean two times a day;
twist up and down!
i hope i helped
