computer help: recently my ps2 mouse started freezing and jumping around sporadically and eventually freezing completely. - Help.com

recently my ps2 mouse started freezing and jumping around sporadically and eventually freezing completely.

happens whether i have a program open or not. the only thing i can do is restart the computer only to have it eventually happen again. i have changed mice, updated drivers, changed mouse settings and multiple virus scans with no results. the cpu is not high when this happens. there is no set pattern. no new programs installed. worked fine one day and didnt the next. my keyboard would freeze also and the lights on it would go out and no buttons would work. not quite as often as the mouse though. if i am holding a key or pressing a button on the mouse it keeps holding until it unfreezes or i reset. i dont know what could cause a mouse and keyboard to have these problems at the same time. any suggestions thanks

what do you mean your ps2 mouse? Playstation 2? you may want to change your mouse pad, if it is on a black surface it may not work correctly.

PS2 is incredibly outdated, but if you insist in not paying 2 dollars for a USB optical mouse, then try these things.
1: If the mouse uses a ball and is not optical, then clean the ball/rollers
2: Check the pins at the connection point, one may be bent or missing altogether.
