Seriously, though, the education system is a supply chain for knowledge. For a supply chain to work efficiently, there must be communication both up and down it. The consumers must receive information from the suppliers and vice versa. The educational system sucks at this. Have you ever complained about a truly awful and ineffective teacher? It doesn’t work; a teacher basically has to molest someone to get fired. There was a “history teacher” at my high school who would literally sit at his desk and read trashy novels every day. He got fired my junior year. That’s three years, at least, of his “teaching” affecting students and their views about school. And he was just benignly terrible; I’ve had teachers who belittle students, make sarcastic remarks, and just don’t care whether or not students succeed

People respect things that they feel they have a stake in. Let’s have effective student governments that give students a real voice in the administration of their schools rather than just allowing them to organize homecoming. Let’s have students involved in the teacher review process, in the curriculum formation process, in the lunch menu selection process. Adults tend to assume that students are stupid and incapable of making mature decisions, but if you treat us like adults, we will rise to the occasion.
