I want to install debian GNU/Linux on my Dell PC

Its an Intel dual core processor and i’m not sure which architecture to install
There seem to be 13 options on the download page:
[alpha] [amd64] [arm] [hppa] [i386] [ia64] [mips] [mipsel] [powerpc] [sparc] [s390] [source] [multi-arch]

It says you only need the 1st dvd but idon’t want to waste time downloading something that won’t work

any help would be appreciated
thanks :)

No, ia64 is the build for “Itanium” (aka “Itanic”) chips.

If you want to run a 64bit build of Debian you should download and install the amd64 iso’s — for both intel and amd even though it has “amd” in the name. The reason is that amd actually popularized 64bit instructions on consumer cpu’s first, and intel eventually had to license this technology from them as software companies (Microsoft) did not want to support two incompatible extensions to x86.

You should also think about installing Ubuntu linux. It’s based off Debian and uses the same package management (apt-get), but has newer versions of things, and is a little easier to install.
