sleep help: my sleeping pattern is awful. - Help.com

my sleeping pattern is awful.

It’s 4.23 AM here. I had a bath, had a drink of hot milk, no caffiene, had a jog earlier and I even have lavender pillow spray! I still can’t sleep. It is driving me mad. Any ideas what might help?

try taking sleeping medicine….if you dont want that, trying sitting up in your bed, closing your eyes, relax your mind and body, and take deep breaths. Its works, you literally can almost fall over with that.

Many years ago, my mother gave me a wise and valuble piece of advice:
“When you can’t sleep, rest.”
So I just lie very still, think about resting, and irritatedly grumble myself to sleep.

I know what you mean. I have a horrible sleeping pattern too. Maybe youre like me.. I dont realize im tired till I actually lay down, and even then I dont feel tired, So I manage to just keep myself awake for hours!! Soo.. like Kiwi said, just rest. Dont stress and freak out about not sleeping.. just try going to bed at a reasonable hour and lay there. It may get you back to a regular pattern.

thanks - i really do need to sortit out, its driving both me and my boyfriend mad. A couple of times he has actually had to relocate onto the sofa to get some sleep. I mean at this second he is lying next to me with me tapping away. because we are both obviously more tired we have both been irritable and snappy which is horrible. Insomnia. Ugh

THINK as little as possible. Shut your mind down for the night.
…yeah. That actually takes a lot of effort, or noneffort depending on how you look at it. Either way it’s difficult. But if you can get it to work…

thanks for the awesome reply to my post about driving far for a girl. if you have to take medication, take melatonin pills. they are safer and shouldn’t be addicting. you can find these at any pharmacy or even wal*mart.
but try this first—get a box of KAVA tea (a company called Yogi Tea is one that makes this). You can find this at a vitamin store or at a Whole Foods. That is supposed to knock you out good and naturally. also, don’t eat or exercise before bed. don’t eat past 8pm. don’t do too much in bed like read, draw, watch t.v. just use bed for sleep. also, if you tense your muscles one by one for about 10 seconds and then let go (ex. tighten feet, let go, tighten thighs, let go tighten hips, let go… work your way up) by the time you’re done you shou;d feel relaxed. sometimes that helps. but try the kava tea first! :)

Maybe 1 mg. of melatonin about 20 minutes before bedtime. Also, try this: Lay flat on your back in the bed, with your arms to your sides. Focus on your feet….mentally and physically relax every muscle in your feet. Next, do the same with your calves and continue moving up. Do it slow enough to feel yourself relaxing. When you get to your head……hit it against the wall. JUST KIDDING. When you get to your head…clear your thoughts and enjoy the peace of the moment. Also you can imagine you are alone on the beach or mountain, etc. I hope this is helpful. Shakey
