you might want to check out politicalcompass dot org
they have quizzes to help you see which party and which candidates most align with your views.
the two major parties
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democrat…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_S…
The election itself (includes other parties)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_S…
It is actually hard to define either party as they are sub-divided into groups with particular interests, and neither party is completely true to the ideals the state in their respective propaganda.
I think what it boils down conservative and progressive… though both sides demonize the other.
One popular tactic during election years is to “galvanize” the user base — meaning that since the religious right votes republican republican politicians will make Gay marriage a big issue knowing that it will get the user base out to vote (even if the politician doesn’t really care about the issue) other republican hot buttons are abortion and tax related stuff (saying dems will raise taxes for the upper class…etc)
Dems do the same with universal health care, and lowering taxes for the middle class
Both just serve to motivate their respective voting base.
Republicans stand for “fiscal and social conservatism” which means they believe the Government shouldn’t go into debt, spend when it doesn’t have money, nor allow certain progressive issues like gay marriage or reproductive rights (choice for abortion)…
However GW Bush has brought our country to recession and spent billions of dollars on a questionable (at best) war… So I really wouldn’t take the current administration as an example of republican ideals.
Dems are more concerned with social issues: Universal health, heavy taxation of the middle class… Civil liberties (Gay rights, Abortion rights…etc) Privacy (Against the patriot act..)
If Obama wins the dem primary he’ll have my vote… otherwise I’ll probably sit out.
I’m australian so i wont be voting in your election but if i could i would vote obama too, although i dont know anything about the mionr parties or their candidates.
As a side not i think the US has the most drawn out money spending election races. Our recent federal election process lasted a month.

There are no minor parties. You get to choose from column a or column b.
We don’t have a coalition system.

Which brings me to another good question. Write-ins. Not sure if those apply to this election or to smaller ones, but if it does apply, is there a list of write-ins or can it be mr smith just walking down the street you feel like voting for?

A coailion is when two or more political parties become one, it is not a system of government.

The 2008 Election.
Now that I can vote I wanted to be informed
on the different political parties and
candidates that will be in the election.
Seeing as multiple searches have given me
different answers I am asking you, the
members of help.com to enlighten me and others
on what each political party stands for, what
their stance is on different issues, and in
general your opinions. Keep it clean =)
