Healthy Eating help.
What are the main things every body needs in a diet? Reason I ask is coz Im trying to be more healthy in what I eat and when I eat. Every time I sit down and plan the weeks meals Im kinda guessing at what we need. So Im looking for directions in what each meal should contain and how often - like for example meat/protein 3 times weekly, green vegetable during monthly etc … (those are just examples so I dont know if they are right) what exactly should I add to my meal planning. What should I stay away from and what should I add? Im not trying diets and stuff coz I dont believe in them - and most of the time once you stop the diet all the weight just piles back on. Im just looking to improve my food/meals to be more healthy. Wondering if yall had some suggestions. Im accepting anything from simple suggestions to actual recipes :)
Thank you in advance - making steps towards healthier longer life!

All you need to live is potatoes… thats all i know =) Oh and the five fruit and veg thing but whatever.
hehehe - yeah potatoes are awesome and you can do loads with them :D but I cant just live on spuds :D hehe
is it me or is the 5 fruit and veg in 1 day impossible? who can honestly say they do this? I mean most dont even eat 1 veg or fruit daily lol
I drink innocent juice sometimes, thats fulla fruit :). But yeah I think youd have to be pretty anal to keep track of how much fruit and veg you eat every day

all that fruit is just so difficult to find the time to eat it all. i make fruit smoothies, just throw the fruit in and add some type of juice. orange, apple. whatevers in the fridge.
yeah :S and its not like the supermarkets help you out here either :S in England they used to have deals to help with the 5 a day wotsit :) they used to promote healthy living. Here there is like 100% more microwave-able meals than fruit and veg :S
i have porridge for breakfast ! that fills you and is healthy :)
and then a sandwich or salad roll for lunch!! :)
sushi is yummy too.
the best thing to do is to thave 6 small meals a day, its better for your body to digest instead of 3 large meals!
yick - Im not a fan of sushi but my hubby loves the stuff :S
6 small meals - how do you find the time for all that! I mean wow
i remember that. at the end of the isle you would have huge gigantic bins full of sweets that were 1 pound for two.
haha yeah - I have a huge sweet tooth :D every time we go shopping I come home with some kinda candy :S not healthy :S
i know. i sit in from of the tele and suck on lemon drops. dont they count as fruit? they should.
hehe too right! I cant see wot isnt healthy about sour strawberry laces … mmmmmm :D
i know. the nutrition facts are just there to make you feel even worse about yourself for eating them!
no, if you want a good recipe.
2 bananas
1 plum
2 cups of orange juice
1 cup of strawberries
1 peach
yum! dont forget to save me some.
ooooo plums are sooo good :D and the strawberries wont make it to the mixer/blender :D but thank you - I will def try it
i love them. my sister hates them sooo much. i like them when they’re JUST soft inside. but not hard… it hate it when they are like that. what i want to try is adding pears. i think that would make it super super good. im gonna go get a fruit smooothie now. Bye!!
it doesnt have to be 6 prepared meals.
but like cereal for breaky
then an apple and banana in there somewhere.
so in stead of a huge hot breakfast
then a bowl of pasta for lunch with a lemonade
and a roast or whatever for dinner
6 smaller servings are much better !
avoid saturated fats ;)
good fats like nuts are great!
good protein too
x
Well, D and I get microwaved, flash frozen veggies that steam in bags. Fresh veggies (salad) in bags.
Brown rice.
We try not to eat beef. Chicken (skinless boneless chicken breasts) are suppose to be the super protein (according to my brother.) Fish, occasional shrimp…
Dressings made of olive oil and vinegar, fresh herbs…
we currently eat a bit of chicken and do have the occasional shrimps :D we love our shrimps :D Im thinking about making the step to only using olive oil in cooking (veg oil if deep frying) I dont think B would give up beef :S and I love making things with ground beef (sooooo many possibilities) I havent a clue where to get brown rice :S the Vons near us is useless! lol thank you Times :D we need to incorporate more chicken possibly
fried foods bad
veggies good, eat as many raw veggies as you want
Actually, you don’t have to completely give up taste, I found it’s just a matter of portions and keeping things balanced.
Breakfast: One starch or grain, one dairy or high calcium food, one piece of fruit, you can even hae butter, jam and nuts in the smallest quantity like the size of a thumb tip.
Lunch: One starch or grain, one protein, one fruit, unlimited veggies (love those veggies)
Dinner: One starch or grain, one protein, and all the veggies you can eat.
Of course I do set a bad example, I actually forget to eat sometimes, lol
Avoid processed foods.
Avoid foods containing high-fructose corn syrup.
Avoid meat and dairy products containing hormones and antibiotics.
cool = thanks yall.
Good ideas Cookies :D more pasta salads and stuff. Didnt realize it needs to be like half your plate of veg and stuff. Sounds like your really really healthy :S
Very helpful list to use Fizz :) I can use that to plan every week day meal :) (hahaha yeah less of the sugary stuff)
Thank you Limon - avoid all processed stuff. Thats gonna be difficult :D coz I love chicken nuggets and stuff hehe esp good for dipping
That’s what I TRY to do Ditzy, but with my Hubby all the best layed plans sometimes go haywire, he loves lots of sweets.
hahaha yeah - I love baking so there is always some thing sweet to eat in my place :D hehe tis difficult. It got so bad at 1 point that you could find 3 packets of candy in my apartment hehe
What’s really bad is, I have a weakness for hostess cakes, personally I can avoid them at the store, but he tries to be sweet and pick things up that he knows I like. Thanks Honey!
haha yeah - I cant avoid tootsie pops or sour strawberry laces :D
I have a thing for twizzlers to, which is ok unless I end up eating the WHOLE bag.
ooo so your saying eat more but space it out!!!! ahhh Cookies I love ya!!!! ~squidges~
hahaha yeah - Im afraid I have absolutely no will power lol
tape up the bag and place it in a safe that you can’t remember the combination to, then hide the combination from yourself, lol
haha nope :D coz I’ll know theres more - and once I start I cant stop. Ive got to eat the whole bag until I feel sick :D
hahahaha good idea with the safe Fizz
lmbo, yup I’m the same way, can’t even take my mind off them, if I know they are anywhere in the house!!
Pig out in moderation, lol
hahaha yeah :D we currently have 3 different types of ice cream in the fridge and today Im making the swiss roll :D hehehe
I told you :D hehehe - we have vanilla, coffee and drumstick :D mmmmmm
ooooo that 1 sounds interesting. Not tried it yet. Had my 1st oreo last week and nearly ate the whole box! they are soooo good dipped in milk til squishy and munched hehe
D and I can’t eat the moo cows—I think it’s because we haven’t found the right cut, supplier. Makes us feel like UGH. We did recently have pork tenderloins broiled in caramelized onion. Then on the flip side we had stoffers (frozen “fresh”) mac and cheese. LOL.
Try finding a Trader Joes, they’re very affordable.
We actually eat yummy basmatti rice (my brother is the healthnut and does the brown stuff) I own a rice cooker (bought at the asian market $100USD, 45 minutes to perfect rice.)
We fry (1-2 tbs of olive oil) left over rice with chianti sausage (2″ minced up), 1/4 medium onion, 3 tbs garlic, small tomato, and sometimes 1/2 sweet pepper. We eat a lot of strange burittos. Left over rice, marinated fish, shrimp, or chicken thighs.
We buy garlic in the (HUGE) jar already minced up. D and I love Garlic and onions.
Our olive oil is a blended oil, canola 2/3 and extra virgin olive 1/3. It’s cost effective, and from what I understand canola is better than veggie.
oooooo that sounds good Times - pork with caramelized apples :D yum we do keep meaning to visit Trader Joes - but always end up a Vons :S probably coz its closer.
heard its tonnes cheaper! Blakes mom said you pay like half for a box of eggs than what you do in Vons. Only problem I have with Trader Joes is that its always different so you might not find what you need on your list :S and the whole idea is Im trying to plan and make lists and be healthy :D not finding some thing on the list could spell disaster.
cool - thank you for the suggestions Silverwings :D Im thinking about buying a steamer thingy to put in my pots. Instead of boiling the living daylights out of every thing LOL
oooooo thats a good idea! never thou about the colander :D they have special metal thingies out here that you put inside the pot :D and they fold down for easy storage
remember ur emotional state of mind affects ur health too!
the less stressed you are, the more healthy you are
and vegatables are good for you :D
ha wow I didnt even think about mentally/emotions. I do have a lot of stress from my family (well only my mom but she counts as several people with the amount of stress she gives me) thank you Spiritedsoul :) very good point :)
2 servings of fruit a day, 3 servings of vegetables; of those, 3-5 a week should be leafy green vegetables. lean protein such as legumes and beans, tofu, soy should be added to your diet. try substituting half the meat in a recipe with tofu.
yick tofu is nasty :S but thank you :) I will be introducing more legumes and beans to my diet :)
Great website: mypyramid.gov
It has a meal planner that shows you what you need to eat each day, and a thingy where you can enter the food you eat and it evaluates EVERYTHING, like whether you are getting enough protein, or too much fat, and it keeps track of all your vitamins. It’s really cool, I use it every once in a while to make sure I’m eating healthy because I’m vegetarian. It gives you little happy or sad faces for each thing, so it’s really easy to use.
We carry cold bags, because sometimes what you want isn’t at the first store.
You can make full, fast, delicious meals on the cheap, as some would say.
Also cut soda pop, heavy sugar beverages out the diet and up your water intake–HUGE difference.
how is your healthy eating going?!
well i hope :)
p.s dont just think about the eating.. think about the exersise too!!
hehe to be honest it isnt going very well. We are still meal planning. We have incorporated more chicken and more vegetables in to our diet and we are drinking a lot more water etc. Still havent found a gym yet - we’ve both been feeling ill :S but it is still some thing we are looking at.
Well as usual I am a bit late. I think you have been told about all the right stuff. But scrolling down the page and seeing talking about sweeties has me drooling cos I have sweet tooth too. Now I have to go and eat my strawberry cheesecake lol. Hope you are managing to change your diet and its working. :)Ditzy wrote:

mmmmmm trolls - can I have cool whip and a cherry on top? please! hehehe
gonna try veggie food this week - coz its veggie week ^_^ see Pae post http://help.com/post/162408-what-if-y…
whip for trolls, oh you said cool whip, either type whip will do, lol
Yeah, I read Pae’s post, I think I’ll have a chicken free week, but I’d starve if all I could eat was veggies.

Trust me helps you. Can give you great recipes, advice, helps you track if you want to lose weight, helps you plan out meals, helps you also keep track of everything you eat if you add it in there so you know how many carbs, sugars, protiens, fibers, salts, etc etc that you are taking in.
