Beauty help: i’m not really sure how to research this …insect? - Help.com

i’m not really sure how to research this …

insect?

it wasn’t until after we used slate when we remodeled our bathroom that i started seeing these little creatures in and around our shower. they look like the slate- same color, and flat, like flakes of stone- so i’m pretty sure they came with the tiles. they’re definitely not endemic.

i haven’t disected any but from what i can see, the “body” is sort of diamond shaped, and there’s a “tongue” that peaks out from one end, pulling the creature along, kind of like a clam. i’m thinking, though, maybe it’s a worm in a cocoon (because it’s soft) or shell, like a hermit crab.

they’re very small. have you any idea what i’m talking about? any idea how to look something like this up?

It’s a difficult one, Insects are put in to different ‘Orders’ e.g plant bugs ‘order Hemiptera’ Moths and Butterflies ‘order Lepidoptera’ etc
not only that but you also have to consider if they have metamorphosis and at what stage they are at ( egg, larva, pupa ).But i think you should start with the mouth part, it sounds as if that one has sucking mouth parts as opposed to biting mouth parts.

no, it’s really like an almond-shaped, soft, grayish, flat shell, with a tongue or maybe a worm living inside it. i will try emailing a photo to the latter link. thanks all.

Have you tried looking around this site? - http://bugguide.net/node/view/15740. It’s pretty helpful.

you guys are so helpful :-)
now i just have to get off my lazy butt, put some batteries in the camera & take some photos!

i’d collected four creatures on a piece of paper to show some friends but when i’d gone back to retrieve them they’d all gone away! (the creatures, not the friends) so i’ll have to wait until they start showing up in my bathroom again…

I don’t know the answer to this, but I’ve found unidentified insects simply by googling them by image. Just type in images, insects, diamond shape & see if that turns anything up. If that particular search doesn’t work, just keep trying different words that describe it & I’m sure you’ll find it!

I have the same problem! In my bathroom for the last five years. I’ve also seen them climbing the walls near the bathroom. And my closet. My back porch has loose brick flooring, and when I checked to see if there was concrete under there, I found a ton of dead ones.
I also see quite a few moths, I just figured they are in some sort of (pupa?) or larvae stage. Thanks for writing, I thought I was the only one with these weird things, I’ve been online for a good hour trying to get some ideas.
