That was really nice. I heard a similar story once. It was about a boy who was the star quarterback and very popular. One day he decided to walk home from school and he saw the nerdy kid in his class carrying a stack of all his books walking across the street. The boy was struggling and a group of kids came by, made fun of him for being a geek and knocked all the books out of his hands.
He saw the boy bend down and trying to pick up all his books so he crossed the street to offer help. He picked up half the load and walked the boy home. Along the way, the discovered they had lots of things in common and the quarterback decided he had never paid much attention to this kid because of his outward appearance but that day he got to see what he carried inside. They became friends. The next day he helped him carry half of his books back to school.
When graduation came, they went to college together. They were roommates and best friends. The nerdy boy was very smart and he was as to be valedictorian at their college graduation. When he got up to begin his speech, he said the person he wanted to thank the most was his best friend. He shared the story that one day he decided to clean out his locker at school and while carrying all of his books home that day, a gang of bullies made fun of him and knocked the stack from his hands. He said this friend showed up when I needed a friend most and he carried half my load. Then he told the audience that had it not been for his best friend, who stopped and took an interest in him that day, that he was heading home to kill himself because he reached the point where he couldn’t handle the bullying anymore.
His friend was crying, listening to this story. During all the years that they had been friends, he never knew he’d saved this guy’s life that day. But he did.
I always say, we never know what that other person is going through or how they are feeling inside so we should try to focus on kindness and give people a chance and help wherever we can. We never know when a rude act or an unkind word can be that last straw in a person’s trauma or when it can make a difference for another day.
Thanks for sharing this!
