Borderline Personality Disorder

How serious is it to have a personality disorder?
I don’t even know if I have it, I was just reading up on it and some of the criteria seem a little familiar.
How bad is a personality disorder in terms of mental illness?

Well, its a pretty serious disorder I’ve only seen one person with it before but he was in a pretty bad way. Id be careful about self diagnosing psychiatric illnesses, you could probably find a “disorder” to fit just about anyone! Border line personality disorder seems to be a fairly recent phenomena as well, maybe a product of the emo generation?

uh, actually, borderline personality disorder is very serious. its among the top band disorders listed in the DSM4-the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental disorders that all psychilogists and psychiatrists use to diagnose mental disorder.

Borderline personality disorder is very rare however. sure you may have some of the criteria, but going off having “some” criteria you could probably diagnose yourself with every disorder ever.
this would need to be diagnosed by a professional and qualified psychologist.

On the subject of the last post, saying that borderline personality disorder is very rare is untrue, as i’ve read in a few reliable sources that it affects a relatively large proportion of the general population…if i remember correctly it was about 5%, may have been more or less , i can’t remmeber

5% out of 100% is pretty rare. Full blown, true borderline is quite rarely diagnosed, however, like most mental disorders it works on a sliding scale of severity. its also a very co-morbid disorder, meaning that in most cases it presents with other disorders as well.
