Quick question about copyright law –

Is using facts from a copyrighted website fair use? Or does this violate copyright law?
Is there a website that explains the answer to my question?

How much of someone else’s work can I use without getting permission?
Under the fair use doctrine of the U.S. copyright statute, it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports. There are no legal rules permitting the use of a specific number of words, a certain number of musical notes, or percentage of a work. Whether a particular use qualifies as fair use depends on all the circumstances. See FL 102, Fair Use, and Circular 21, Reproductions of Copyrighted Works by Educators and Librarians.

Thanks, that sort of helped. The circumstance is that someone is trying to post facts on their profile on a website licensed CC-By, but the website they got the facts from is copyrighted. Another user removed the facts, stating that it was a copyright violation.

If the person “borrowing” the facts from the other site, there shouldn’t be a problem as long as they cite their source properly. If they do not cite their source, or if they do so incorrectly, then they could get into trouble for copyright violations.

copyright violation is the unauthorized use of material that is covered by copyright law, in a manner that violates one of the copyright owner’s exclusive rights, such as the right to reproduce or perform the copyrighted work, or to make derivative works.

if the person copy the “facts” , “contents”, “materials” from other site without permission of the author i think it is a copyright violation. It is better that you email the owner of the website or read the website “policy and condition” on the content.
