sleep help: I am fifteen years old and I am an insomniac. - Help.com

I am fifteen years old and I am an insomniac.

I am turning sixteen in a few months, but even as young as I am, I have been an insomniac for several years now.

I’ve been subject to auditory hallucinations at the point where I am awake, and just about to fall asleep. I have also been subject to several visual hallucinations, but the stubborn nature of my mother refuses to do anything about it. I would like to get help, but we’re currently bogged down. Anyway, these hallucinations, and many horrible nightmares that I have almost every night, have made me very paranoid. My dreams are freakishly realistic and contain inhuman, horrifying images in settings I know - such as, my room. I said that to tell you this: the paranoia does NOT help my insomnia at all.

I can be exhausted, but my body just will not fall asleep. Lately, it’s been getting worse. Three days ago, I was up until 7:00 a.m., and then I was able to sleep until 11:00 a.m.

Yesterday, I was up until 5:30 a.m., and had to rise for school at 6. Right now, it is three in the morning where I am and I am wide awake. The only sleep I can ever get now are little naps after school. I thought that maybe my biological clock was the issue, but my body is waking itself up before it even has had time to get any actual rest.

Any help?

Have you gone to the doctor? I have two friends who take medication for their insomnia, both 16.

See, one of my best friend takes pills to help her fall asleep. However, this medication has been giving her violent health problems. I was looking online and found other people with issues as well. I have three diseases in my blood as is as well as anxiety problems… I fear that medication may worsen my condition. If anything, I’d need to get to someone who can work out my mental distortions… but my parents just don’t have time to take me, I guess.

I am no way a professional, but I have had to learn about some of this stuff for exams. Because this info is based on my interpretation of what I have read, it may not be complete.

Let’s see… one symptom of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)is insomnia.

Bipolar disorder can include lack of sleep during the states of hyperactivity.

Auditory hallucinations are linked to schizophrenia, except the onset of schizophrenia tends to be in the late teens and early 20’s.

Stressful events in your life, numerous little events or one larger event could be linked to your symptoms.

Also, your brain is growing at your age. The amygdala (emotion centre in your brain)is developing and could influence some of what you are experiencing.

Snar has stated the best advice, which is see your doctor, and ask them to refer you to a psychiatrist.

I do not have ADHD or bipolar disorder - I can assure you that.

I’ve considered that I might, just might have schizophrenia. I have had a few dark tragedies that have happened when I was much younger.

Again, I have major anxiety problems and I wouldn’t doubt that they’re hurting the situation, but there is no way for me to deal with them. I have been hallucinating also since I was younger - more visual then, but not as much now.

My mom, who is spiritual, believes that “someone” is trying to contact me from beyond the living. We interpreted a dream from a few days ago that included signs of ‘connection’ from the dead (phone ringing, static). She believes that I may be seeing glimpses of things.

But I digress, I’ve always been suspicious in the area of ghosts and such and I’m sure you also have your own beliefs.

I’ve been to the school counselor, but they’ve only been able to connect me to suicide hotlines - I used to have slightly suicidal tendancies. Right now, I need mental examination and help.

I know psychology and psychiatry discount the spiritual world. However, as Descartes realized, there is no way to determine what is, and what is not, reality. We only know what is based on our perceptions, and our perceptions are based on what we can see, hear, taste, smell etc. Also, what we already know influences what information we pick up from the environment. Therefore, seek professional help first, but keep in mind that science and psychology are constantly discovering new things.

My knowledge about schizophrenia is only based on a textbook. According to the textbook (which has limited info compared to what a psychiatrist would know), schizophrenics suffer no symptoms except for somewhat strange behavioural patterns when they are 3-4 yrs old, and then nothing unusual until they experience an onset of hallucinations or delusions when they are in late teens and early 20’s. The hallucinations tend to be in the 3rd person (they hear people talking about them in their head), and people who are schizophrenic tend to believe that their radio and TV is sending them messages.

If you experienced stress when you were younger, then what you have could be post-traumatic stress disorder. Clinical psychologists treat this condition often.
My sense of it is that when a person experiences a stressful event, somehow their amygdala takes over and even after the event is over, they keep experiencing trauma in their mind over a long period of time.

If your mom wont help maybe you should try going to your school. I am sure they will be able to help. I don’t know much about this so i don’t know what else to say. But i am sure your school could do something
