So, I’ve gotten the course registration papers for High School today…

I have so much trouble deciding classes. All my friends are taking the ‘easy classes’ and I feel like a geek for having to decide between Biology 1 Honors or German 1, or having Chorus year long and be left out on Conditioning for 9th Grade Athletes…
And!
Freshmen also have to declare a Major Area of Interest. After High School, I want to be a psychobiologist, which is kind of like human psychology meets animal behavior. A psychologist has to have complete medical training, plus psychology courses.
In college, I want a doctorate in psychology, a master’s in animal behavior, and an associate’s degree in English literature. There are more than a few majors to choose from, but I’ve narrowed it down to Health Science Education, Science, and Language Arts. Those were the only that appealed to me, but Health Science Ed. (which seems just like medical training etc.) seems the most specific, as the others are really broad…
Anyways.
I’ve just been ranting, kinda.

How am I gonna do this?

Um, okay. Thanks…
I have a C- in Algebra 1 Honors, but math’s never been my strong point…I just get confused when you put tons of numbers together. Anyways, thanks guys (but that doesn’t help me decide…) but still, thanks.
I guess I want someone to tell me what to do, as I can’t make the decision myself.

I know nothing about the American education system. Just do your best not to take any courses that will never be useful to you ever. Aside from that, no thoughts.

Okay, I did this last year and i live in Florida too. Definitely take the biology 1 honors class, i love mine. You’ll have to take it eventually, im taking 2 science courses this year.

Then again, you also need foriegn language, so whichever you want if you have to only choose one.

Oh, and the major thing, you have to pick one every year, and it really doesn’t change anything at all. It’s pretty stupid, it doesn’t do anything. Well, in Palm Beach it doesn’t, idk if it’s a county or state thing.

Get ahead of the game :) Try to get credits out of the way in your freshman and sophomore years, and then you’ll basically be coasting through most of your classes in your junior and senior year. :)

Yeah, I chose some of the classes you’re required for education, but don’t need Freshmen year, just to get ‘em done and over with.
I wanted to take Latin, but the High School doesn’t offer it anyone. And, according to some people I’ve talked to, the Major kinda helps determined what classes you got. Like, if you signed up for HOPE ( a health/gym class) and your major was Physical Education, you would be higher on the waiting list for it.
I don’t know. All of it seems so awesome. I do want to take Science Research, like I did the past two years, but it’s a 0 Period class, which means I’d have to show up before school…

Go for hard science first, then languages second. Forget chorus.

Chorus is my favorite…plus I probably need the elective credit.
Why forgetting chorus? I need two foreign language credits to graduate high school

If you’re aiming for a highly selective college, focus on taking the harder classes. Essentially you want four years of a foreign language, four years of math, four years of social studies, four years of a science, and four years of english. As a junior about to get ready for the college application process for next year, I recommend you to take the harder courses because it looks much better on your college application. Try getting some extracurricular activities and volunteer hours too. Of course, this is only if you want to go to a really selective college. Generally though, for electives, just try choosing what you’re interested in.

Once upon a time I was a professor. I knew that hard science was something most students didn’t get in sufficient quantity. And, to be totally honest, it’s not the high school activities that will be so memorable–it will be what activities you engaged in during college, e.g., sororities, academic societies, varsity athletics. I have a stepdaughter who is a veterinarian, and it was very important for her to take all of the chemistry and biology and math in undergraduate school that she could. You’ll need to do the same thing. You will probably need to major in biology or psychology–your academic advisor can tell you. I would advise getting a baccalaureate degree in one of those fields; you won’t really need an associate’s in English literature.

Good luck!

I know I won’t need one, but I’m interested in such. Yes, I want to be a psychobiologist, but I’m also a big time reader and writer. So. I don’tknow.
Thanks, though!

from personal experience, i regret signing up for the hardest possible classes my freshmen year. Just keep in mind its better to get an A in a slightly easier class than a B in a harder class. like i wish i didnt take biology my freshmen year cause then my sophmore year i had to take chem and i got a B in bio and im barely getting an A in chem… if i took life science freshmen year and bio this year i probably wouldve gotten a solid A in both…

and plan ahead, try to map out all the classes you will take for the next four years.
sigh i wish i took geometry and algebra 1 in my freshmen year, cause i find them both easy…if i took them both the same year then i wouldnt have to take a math my senior year and i would have time for another elective….
oh well.

Ah, PPP, my son took a “diversion” on the road to his doctorate in theology–he went for a second master’s degree in theology rather than the doctorate. So did his wife. “Streamline” your academic path as much as possible, without cutting anything you need. The point is that you can stretch out and “pad” things too much, and the money and time required for college are in finite supply! But I am sure you are going to really do well!

Okay, then Jason. Actually, I took/am taking Algebra 1 honors in eighth grade, so I should have been able to take geometry, but I have a C, for a lot of stupid mistakes.
And chev.jame, that makes sense. But just so you know, money isn’t a problem. As long as I go to a college in the United States, the reservation pays for it. Well, if it’s a good college.

Glad you won’t have to be worrying about money! That’s one less worry! When you get there, just make sure you don’t get distracted! Dating can take up a LOT of time, and many courses will require you to hole up in your dorm room or the library like a monk or nun! But you are quite focused, and I am predicting that you will do quite well. Now, a lot of courses you will have to take are “quantitative” in nature, so just tell any “math anxiety” to go away. You will do fine!
