Family help: I’m worried about my dad (motorcycle). - Help.com

I’m worried about my dad (motorcycle).

He has always wanted to get one and now he’s getting a nice BMW motorcycle, one he’s always wanted. He’s getting is motorcycle license tomorrow and on Sunday getting the bike itself.

My mom said he probably won’t ride in the car on family trips as often, and you won’t see him at all, probably, and she laughed at this, but I couldn’t tell if it was a joke or not.

He’s wearing a helmet and all the gear he needs.
He’ll be careful with it, but me being his always-worrying teenage daughter, I don’t really approve of it. I can’t change his ways but I can’t help but be scared for him because of all the motorcycle crash stories I have heard of.

I need some comfort. u.u

I can see why you would be scared. Just remember that your dad is a responsible adult with children and he wont be drag racing probably. Motorcycles can be safe if you are responsible. Tell him you’re scared, though. It’s perfectly normal to feel the way you are feeling. Communication is important.

I know he won’t be doing any risky things like that, but I can’t help but worry. DD: Or think of the impossible, if you know what I mean. DD: I mean, what ifffff….?!

He’s my dad and I love him to pieces. I don’t want anything to happen to him just because of some silly dream of his. D;

I think some people are just inclined to worry about things the way you’re doing right now. :) Don’t worry, after your father has been driving his motorcycle for awhile, the feeling will pass.

Why don’t you ask him if you can ride with him? If you do, maybe you’ll see it’s not as dangerous as you think it is.

Haha. My mom says absolutely NO to this, because I have younger siblings and I know how they like to follow.
I don’t know, it just scares me. I have heard so many bad stories. Will helmets really protect?

You used to live in Alexandria? We were visiting there on Easter vacation two weeks ago. GORGEOUS place. You live by DC?

Yeah, I used to live 30 min away. I love the metropolitan area too. You can go practically anywhere by bus.

I think helmets protect to a certain extent. If I were you, I would tell my dad how I felt about it. He’ll love you more for it.

The “new” will wear off the motorcycle after a while, and it will increasingly be parked while he rides with all of you in the family car. I used to ride a motorcycle but quit after one too many “close calls.” I do not like them because of the safety factor, although they are fun to ride if you’re not getting run off the road by pickup trucks or getting soaked in a heavy rain! Make sure he has leather outerwear, because it’s better for leather to skid on the pavement than his skin. You might remind him that the single largest source of organ donations is motorcycle riders–that should keep him on his toes.

Unfortunately, riding a motorcycle can be addictive, so there are no guarantees that he’s going to stop anytime soon…

Hopefully your dad is old enough to not be stupid. Ideally, he’s be old enough to realize that everybody else is stupid.

*****. Let the man live a little. He already fulfilled his genetic imperative by raising you.
