I have seen this kind of problem before, maybe i can post some answers here:

Check your power saving settings, try disabling them while you do a scan, also close any other program that may be running in the background.

or go to this site. the same problem happened to someone.

I read the thread at the link you posted. The problem there was a firewire card. I wish I knew if I had one of those…sigh…

I’ve disabled power settings. How do I make sure programs in the background are closed?

Run your virus scans in safe mode. Reboot and press F8 repeatadly until you get a blue screen then select the continue in safe mode. Also If your PC seems like its slowing down or having a hard time surfing the web or just doesn’t seem right.
You should go to http://download.com and get these programs. AD-Aware, Spybot search and destroy, CCleaner and and if you don’t have an Antivirus program you can use Avast or AVG, and for your firewall a good program is Zone Alarm. Install these programs and run them regularly. This will keep your system clean and running properly. These programs are free and Download.com is a part of CNET (the site that your posting on right now). Hope this helps :-)

I rebooted into safe mode several times. Each time the computer shut down after about 10 seconds once the computer was in safe mode - I had not started to do anything yet. I have Ad-Aware - when I run it the computer shuts down during the scan. I have CCleaner and use it regularly. I have BitDefender Anti-Virus and it runs a full scan daily - when it runs the computer shuts down during the scan.

The shut downs in safe mode especially concern me. The link by ~lilies~ above leads to a thread about someone with the same problem. His problem was firewire. I wish I knew how to look for firewire.

I seriously have not dealt with that yet. I always have a technician do it for me as i am not computer savvy. Anyway, i am asking some friends who might know. Let’s see what we get when they are online.

I’ve tried running AVG Anti-Spyware and AVG Anti-Virus. The computer shuts down when they are run as well. I’ve tried doing a reinstall but the computer shuts down during that process too.

Sorry for keeping you waiting so long, I have only just loged on and found an invite to your post.

Two things to try.

First.
Click Start.
Click Run.
Type SFC /RUNNOW (type it exactly as you see it) all in upper case and there must be a space before the /
Click ok.

Second (if that does not work) You will need to set your computer back to it’s factory settings.
Some virus cant be removed by any of the anti virus programs, this is the only method of getting rid of that type of virus.

If you need help with that, you will have to let me know.

When I run McAfee virus scan, my computer shuts down after about 15-20% of scan. When I restart the computer, I don’t see any message that the computer was shut down abruptly. What is this behaviour? How do I overcome this?

HELLO dude i,ve got rid of same problem you faced….do u know how…..If u take advice of me
1. open your CPU case
2.check your FAN connected to processor is not full of dirt….if it is then clean it neatly…
3.tight your fan otherwise your computer will not start….or your processor will be damaged…
4.if it doesnot work u must change your cooling fan…

i told you because am an I.T engineer i used to have same problem u can see my post but now i knew this is not done by any virus when u run big programs .DVD video, games, scaniing for virus it happens beacause of processor over heatinng…..

I hope this helps lot of people……if not please reply me i’ll try to help u as much i can…..

For any of you that are having a problem with your computer shutting down during a virus scan..TRY THIS..Down load Malwarebytes (Anti Malware..its free, and do a scan..because i was having the same problem, and virus scans would NOT find what Malewarebytes found..I had a malicious software in my files called P2P.Dopper…Once Malewarebytes found this and it will get rid of it after you click on it, if its the same one i had, and remove it!!! Hope this helps those of you with the same problem..Good luck…Kathy

To all of you that are having a problem with your computer shutting down while doing a virus scan…I had a similar situation, and this is what you can do to fix the problem….Down load Malwarebytes (its free) and do a scan…Virus protection or scans will NOT find this malicious software…I have virus protection and my scans did not pick it up..But there WAS a malicious software called P2p.Dopper in my files..and once I Removed it with Malwarebytes my computer no longer shuts down while doing a virus scan..also make sure you check to see that your antivirus software is updated because it kept mine from updating itself…Once you find it, if its the same as mine, make sure you click on it and click REMOVE…Hope this helps those of you with the same problem i was having…Good luck!!! Kat

To all of you who have the same problem. Kgilme is right, the solution is mostly at the CPU high temperature due to CPU fan’s improper function. In my case, first I thought of virus infection because I ‘ve just cleaned my computer’s case not too long ago. I searched online and tried everything I could, but no use. Finally, I had no choice but opened and checked inside my case. To my relief, I found a wire stuck in the CPU fan. Problem solved!!!
You don’t have to download anything to check your CPU temperature. Just restart your computer, go directly to its BIOS configuration. I believe there is somewhere you can check CPU as well as system temperatures. Good luck!!!

I have faced this problem before It may be caused by virus or malware. But the main reason may be your hardware. Some times your Processor gets overheated and to prevent damage to your computer its shuts down automatically the reason is when you run a virus scan or do anything that uses more PC power or strength. Here is what i did and solved my problem - Turn off your computer unplug it from the power socket and open your back cover after that remove your Processor fan and the Heat Sync then clean the fan and the heat sync very carefully if you can clean the heat sync with water then do it so but remember after u wash the heat sync don’t re-fit it immediately but dry it well in sunlight or by a hair dryer. You can also clean the RAM Slots and your PC Cabinet Fan. In addition you can clean your motherboard with a soft brush. After you have done refit all the hardware you have removed and turn on your PC. Im sure it will work perfectly. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Dear acquaintances & moderators,
I do have desk top machine; core dual with XP OS.
I am facing frequent shut down of system. I do have licensed AVG-2013 Anti Virus. When I conduct complete virus scan of my hard drive; it gets shut down automatically. And when I attempt to restart for immediately after abrupt shut-down; it doesn’t respond to restart.
Apart from the complete virus scanning of system, many times it shut down in same way - abruptly. And when I attempt to restart for immediately after abrupt shut-down; it doesn’t respond to restart.
When I get it tested by hardware engineer on initial level; they say… it is fine. They kept it start for 8-10 hrs.
o Does it related to virus?
o Does it related to malware?
o Does it related to processor fan?
o Does it related to switching-mode power supply – SMPS fan?
o Do the processor heats up when antivirus run; or during multi-tasking?
It will be great if anyone can help me out.

Check your processor cooling fan sounds like your pc is overheating and thats why its shutting down. Hope this helps :-)
