LiveCD Help!

So, I’ve wanted to try out Ubuntu.

However, I don’t want to buy the CD- I want to be able to boot Ubuntu from a CD, iPod, or other storage system. Is there any way I could download Ubuntu onto a storage device in a way that I can run it directly from it, without putting it on my hard drive?

Note: I use Windows XP, if you need to know that.
