I cant get my Xbox360 live to set up!

Ive connected it up directly to my computer and entered the IP adress, Subnet Mask and the Gateway manually. Now it says Your gateway did not respond to a network request and I dont know what to do. Any help?

Aren’t you supposed to connect it to a broadband modem or a router, and not directly to a computer?
