Does anyone have any revision tips?

I have my *** coming up, and I don’t really know how to revise effectively. At the moment it’s just me writing notes from my textbooks/school notes… it doesn’t seem to be going in.

Any help will be appreciated.

You need a plan. There are lots of techniques that will help you remember information, such as nmemonics. Try going to a local bookstore or library and asking for the revision guides, also called study guides. Plan your time effectively, work out how many subjects you have exams for, and how much time you have to study. Then divide it up into reasonable amounts for each topic.

Leave pleanty of time to relax as this allows your mind to absorb the information. Don’t have lots of distractions, although some soothing music may help. Try writing out the information into a differnt form. For example if it is a large piece of text, try making a flow chart with all the key points. Or make a spider diagram or mind map linking all the relevant points.

Hope this helps.

Write small notes about the things you forget, and leave them in places you see everyday (bathroom mirror, bedroom door etc).

I’ve just had my 3rd year mocks (in Scotland) and I find it really useful to keep your notes short and make sure they look really attractive: write neatly in a nice colour etc.

I use little tips to help me remember things, for example I had to memorize all these housing Acts passed between 1830 and 1900 for history, so I memorized the first date and then how many years passed between that one and the next etc. So I was like, 1833, 2yrs, 2yrs, and so on.

Anograms are helpful too, like the diatomic elements in chemistry: Harry (Hydrogen) Never (Nitrogen) Offers (Oxygen) Free (Flourine) Chocolate (Chlorine) Before (Bromine) Interval (Iodine).

Get someone to test you on each sheet you make, get them to make up questions or just sit while you go through everything, then you can have some input on what you need to work on and things like that.

Darn! Someone posted just before I finished, hop you still want to read this.

Good Luck!!

Just a little point but the technique posted above as an ‘anogram’ is actually a acronym. e.g. Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain’ for remembering the colours of the rainbow. (Red, Orange, yellow etc.)

A very useful technique as Little Beau Peep says.

Sorry, I had just left and realised exactly the same thing so I ran back to point that out, thanks Shellfish.

An anagram is where you scramble the letters of a word or sentence to make something else, like “Angel” is an anagram of “Glean”.

You’re welcome ‘LBP’. And Sarahhh, please ask your teachers too. I’m sur they would be thrilled by your enthusiasm and willingness to work. They may have some great tips or some revision books that could help.

Very good luck in your exams. I hope you do really well.

I use a mind map for some subjects, I put the topic i want to revise in the center of the page & add what i know round about it. If i don’t have alot of things round the outside then i know i need to study that topic more.

And yeah I have a few revision guides that were recommended to me which are not that helpful in comparison with my notes as they’re not really detailed enough and I can’t seem to get hold of any specific to my exam boards.
