Go on a Health Q & A website. The full feeling might not return for anything up to six months - that’s one of the ‘risks’ of breast surgery. It’s barely been 2 weeks so you have plenty of time for it to fix itself. Speak to your surgeon or your GP.

your nipples have lots of nerves in them. It is possible that the one
which is sensitive is just oversensitive compared to the other one.
Give it some time. It’s also possible that during the surgery nerves were cut
to the one that is not sensitive. In this case it may not come back
to its high degree of sensitivity. You may have to live with the reduced sensitivity
for the rest of your life.check with your doctor about this.

In any case don’t worry about it. All will be well.

it sounds like that nipple is oversensitive. This will probably decrease over time.

you know when you get a skin burn or bad sunburn your skin becomes burning
and prickly. And in the case of a bad burn it hurts.

From what I read, it could just be temporary loss of sensation, or become permanent (rarely). What does your doctor think??

If it continues you should check with the doctor again. Give it a week or two.
If it looks infected or abnormal go to the doctor earlier.

“You may notice that you feel less sensation in the nipple and areola areas. This usually is temporary. It may, however, take weeks, months or even more than a year before sensation returns to normal. Your breasts may also require some time to assume a more natural shape. Incisions will initially be red or pink in color. They will remain this way for many months following surgery.”

” This multiple innervation likely explains why most studies show that although sensation in the nipple areola complex declines after surgery for up to several months, it usually returns to preop levels within 1 year.”

I think it’s nothing to worry about, though unfortunately it’s annoying?

It’s a nipple - they warn you of this very strongly before surgery - your own nipples cannot confuse you - you are doing that to yourself. It’s not like you are recovering from surgery for a malignant tumour, this week. All of this is well laid out long before they cut you up. Calm down and take some painkillers or rub ice on the other nipple and they’ll both be the same

Yeah, I can imagine it’s annoying…

I have a problem with pinched nerves from my herniated disc, and my leg has been numb and tingly for several months now… somewhere between feeling completely dead or weird sensations and tingling… and it’s really annoying!!! So I’m guessing it’s a weird feeling like that, sort of. :( In my case it may or may not get better too… they just don’t know. All we can do is wait.

But from what I’ve read, this will most likely pass in your case… just takes time. I don’t know if there’s some way to protect it from the weird sensations you’re feeling??

You know, when I was looking for information about it, there was some mention of neurological disturbances being a possible result too. When do you see the doctor next? Have you mentioned this to him??

Get some anti-histamine for the itching - rub ice on itchy parts and see your doctor about a cream that will take away the external tingling. You can only eradicate the symptoms right now - I’ve had 11 breast surgeries in past year - the itching is the breast healing, the tingling is nerve/repair damage and it wont confuse you mentally if you go to the doctor and get stuff to ease it. Stay away from hot water - dont wear bras with polyester or nylon. Dont rub or scratch and make sure your hygiene is scrupulous. Furthermore do something to take your mind off it - its a natural ‘complication’ of this surgery - some time soon youwill wake up and realise it’s gone

Believe me - if you want a good nights sleep you will go and see the doctor and dont be fobbed off, there are hundreds of things they can prescribe, if you want I’ll dig out what they prescribed me for the tingling, etc and send you the drug names. It was the first normal day I had after the first operation after I got that stuff, good luck - but dont leave it

Antihistamine cream , anti-histamine tablets, low doze diazepam and a very stern warning that due to surgery on breasts you can become very weepy, depressed and generally anxious (hence the diazepam). Trust me after the second operation I was so into a routine of the stuff I described to you before about ice packs and cotton bras it was a breeze. whats bothering you is you’ve never done this before - you dont know whats coming next. chill - deal with each thing as it comes up. and FYI - after 11 operations since Xmas 2006 I have full feeling in both nipples - you’re just a bit panicked. Get back to the doctor tomorrow

Hi, I am quite new to the site and don’t know how to initiate a private conversation. If you know how to do this I have info which I’m not comfortable posting publicly. I’m an old fashioned prude I know when it comes to body parts! If not, I hope it works out for you.

Just type in your post - look down at the bottom and click the post anonymously box on the screen - no-one knows who you are and remember that every time you answer an e-mail you click the post anonymously box again try it for something you arent too bothered about first any old post - just to get the hand of it. Then get in their with your anon post and wait for the answers - good luck

Hi Spirited soul. I have also had this operation. At forst they were extra sensitive to the point of pain. But them after a couple of months they settle down to normality or even a little under sensitive. However one looks normal, whilst the other sort of lies to one side, but performs normally in the cold if you get my drift. The operation is quite a big thing, it takes a long time to get over. But things will get better. I nearly died having my op, I did not recover consciousness and had to go back to emergency surgery. I had a 2lb blood clot and had to have two blood transfusions before they could stop the bleeding. So quite frankly I think having 1 of them look a bit wonky is fine! lol

PS I’ve just read the previous, but 1 post, that obviously isn’t me!!!!! I’m just another anon….

I could only sleep on my back for a couple of months, but it does ease off I promise. On my first day home I cried all day, I couldn’t believe someone had taken a knife, an actual knife, and chopped my boobs off! (Even though I had asked them to, that seemed kind of irrelevant!) I suppose I went into a bit of shock. Very weepy for ages.

But it DOES get better and I was buying litle gorgeous tops and bras before I knew it. My mum also told me it was the first time in years she had seen me stand upright properly. Definately worth it.
