Nothing big I just thought I would share my lament.
Few years ago while I was in high school I played the trumpet in band. Back then I was pretty good at playing it too. Since I got out of high school and stopped having a group to play with though I haven’t been practicing very often. I mean like once or twice a year. So this is completely my own fault but I still wish it weren’t so. The thing is when I play now the sound isn’t the same, the beat seems off, the feel is wrong. Used to be I would pick up that horn and make it sing, most of the time now it is just noise coming out a piece of metal. Every now and then I can hear it sing but it is always short lived. So like I said my own fault, and I intend to fix it by picking up the hobby again and actually playing more than once in a blue moon. Thanks for listening.

Where were you?

Let it come out off your Heart, play with your Heart my friend
come on Lois Armstrong let me hear the blues….
Hmm there is something very sweet in the blues to be heard for sure.
I suppose it is your lack of, er, shall we say wind because the other word will go through filters and I seem to be being watched very carefully since my account got deleted for, what reason I don’t know? Excuse my rant.
When your not practising try filling your lungs with air to stretch them. A bit of exersice shold help in that department too.
I don’t play myself, but I do have a bugle - so if you can give me any tips I would love to make it ’sound’ rather than squeek!
Start on the low notes, it takes time to build the muscles needed in order to play higher ones and make them come out clearly and sounding good. Play slow things at first, they aren’t the funnest things in the world but they are much better things to train with especially if you need to work on your sound. Oh and give ti plenty of air. Another need little way of improving while not playing is practice your articulation(tonguing) while your sitting around bored, walking down the street, or if you can multi-task any old time. Oh one last thing to build muscle you can also do octave exercises where you simply go between octaves over and over again at an increasing rate.
Does that work for the bugle?
I’ve played both bugle and trumpet and they are practically the same instrument, plus or minus the valves. So as far as building lip muscle and articulation are concerned what works for one should work for the other.
Could you give me some starting tips. My dad died recently and he had a collection of things he would have loved to have had when he as a boy and couldn’t afford - one of these was a bugle. I would love to play it, or atleast get one good sounding note.
See if you can’t find some bugle music to listen to, it can help you develop an ear for the sound and the notes. Then get some basic songs off the internet. The hardest part will be being able to tell if the notes your playing correspond to the notes on the page, for that I recommend picking a well known tune to start with say Taps or Revily. Or something that you can find a recording of so that you can play along with the recording or just listen to it an see if it sound kinda like what your playing. That or else get an electronic tuner that will tell you what note you are playing. Once you are at the point where you can look at a note on a page and play it everything else is just practice.
But how do I get the note in the first place, I blow and it ‘arts is the best way to describe it. That takes all the breathe I have and only happens sometimes - admittedly I have not had time to proactise as I need my neighbours to be out at the time. My dog attacks it too, so you can see how bad things are!!
actually dogs aren’t fond of the noise even when it is the right noise. The trick is not just to blow air into the bugle but to buzz your lips. Your lips vibrating is what actually generates the sound, the air simply makes it project beyond the horn. The other thing that would work, but I don’t know if you would have access to is finding someone who plays a trumpet or bugle in your area and seeing having them check to make sure the sounds you make are actually notes and not just sound. It took me a wile to get that part down.
lol sholva, believe me they are not notes!!! My dog doesn’t like my djeridoo either. I wish I could find someone. I keep looking. But will certainly practise the buzzing lips, I thought I just blew and twisted my lips into different shapes to creat different noises. Thank you so much for that, very helpful. I suggest a bit of jogging to build up your lungs, or some form of exercise. Walk a lot too, but don’t amble. I have always been active and have huge lung capacity - or I used to anyway. This is how they train racehorses to increase their lung capacity. Hope you get back to your pitch soon.
Actually to change pitch you tighten your lips, increasing the rate at which they are buzzing. loosen them to do the opposite; it doesn’t take much change in your Embouchure but it is an important feature for playing any brass instrument.
Thank you for the input, I will try follow your instructions. Can I get back if I need to? Wish I could help you more with yours.
precisely right, and that is what I’ve been doing lately. Well not last night I was to busy doing homework but most nights.
Maybe your playing is the same but you now have a more discerning ear.
