I babysit a 10 year old boy who has adhd and doesn’t know how to read, write, or tie his shoes.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can help him learn to do these things and focus?

Attention deficit disorder (ADD, I hate ADHD, why add hyperativity, it is a sysptom not a title?) is a very complicated disorder. Take things VERY slowly. Lots of praise helps, and I mean lots. Break even the simplist task into even smaller bits, then take them through it one bit at a time and build on it. I think it is wonderful that you want to teach him. There are lots of books on this, try borrowing one from a library and reading up on it.

OK, thanks. His parents don’t seem to have any interest in teaching him any of these necessary skills.

That’s terrible, they should embrace all they need to know. It’s good that you have come into his life, it’s great that there is someone who cares about his development. But you do need specialist help, even if it’s just from a book.
