is this sentence weird: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my journalism career since its start in 7th grade.”

My parents both think using the word “its” is weird
They think I should say “since I started it in 7th grade”
but i think that sounds terrible.

I like the way you wrote it. It sounds the best that way, and is grammatically correct.

well i like that but i think it sounds kinda bad calling it a hobby when im applying to be an editor for my school newspaper. Cause i state that its a passion of mine and I want to be the editor-in-chief of a major publication someday, and “hobby” sounds like just an interest rather than a passion.

Thanks, my parents are just making me worried my teacher wont get it right away. They dont think its right to use two different pronouns in that one sentence, but “its” refers to my “journalism career”, so i thnk it should be fine right?

You were exactly right. “Its” is refering to something previously stated. your teacher will understand what youre saying.

I like this line of thinking much better. A “career” really isn’t something one starts while they are still in grade school. Until you have gained formal education and earned a salary, it’s really more of a hobby or interest, which is still cool. I’d go with something like the example above because, aside from being more gramaticallly cound, it sounds like a more apt description.

It’s fine. Don’t change it because your parents think its wrong.
Who’s the writer in the argument?
